11: RIP Robert Pastorelli:
Another character actor, Robert Pastorelli was found dead from a
drug-related episode. The 49 year old actor gained recognition as
Murphy Brown's painter in Murphy Brown. He also appeared big name
films suchs as Striking Distance and Eraser. What a waste of talent.
Mar
11: THX-1138: George Lucas'
crappy feature THX-1138 is heading to dvd with new visual and such
from ILM. This isn't going to make a horrible film any better. Why not
spend the money to redo the effects for something like Willow.
Mar
11: Star Trek: The original is
finally getting dusted off and readied for seasonal boxed sets from
Paramount. Fans should be able to pick up the overpriced season one
boxed set sometime between September and Christmas.
Mar
11: Harsh Realm: The
short-lived Chris Carter series Harsh Realm:The Complete Series is
heading to DVD May 26th. Where the HELL is SPACE ABOVE AND
BEYOND??? (the digitalbits.com)
Mar
11: Troopers 2: The direct to
video sequel "Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation"
will blast its way to shelves on June 8th, 2004.
Mar
11: Pitch Black: The film is
heading to dvd again. This time with four different versions. You'll
have the rated and unrated, as well as letterbox and pan and suck. Be
careful which versions you pick up.
Mar
11: The Dukes Are Back: The
Dukes of Hazzard are heading to dvd in their seasonal boxed sets. The
first season jumps into retailers on June 1st. Does that mean, "Enos",
"The Adventures of Sheriff Lobo", and "BJ & the
Bear" are close behind? Nah... "Enos, you dip
stick!"
Mar
11: Howard The Duck: Nope,
this one isn't heading to DVD. Just thought I would throw the name out
there. The picture flopped, but I actually enjoyed the film a bit. It
wasn't great, but I have seen worse.
Mar
11: Seven Days Directs:
Jonathan LaPaglia who starred in Seven Days on UPN and is currently
taking down bad guys on the District directed the episode titled
"The Black Widow Maker", which airs April 2nd. Jerry Van
Dyke (Coach) will star in the episode.
Mar
11: Empire: The ABC limited
series will star Vince Regan as Marc Anthony, Jonathan Cake (Viper
& Space Rangers) as Teranus and Santiago Cabrera as Gaius
Octavious. This is one expensive series.
Mar
11: MONK: 5.51 million viewers
tuned in for the season finale of MONK on the USA Network Friday
night. Monk is sure to be renewed for a third season. Crap, I missed
most of the episodes this season.
Mar
11: Dempsey Turns to TV: Film
actor Patrick Dempsey is joining the numbers of feature film actors
turning to television for that regular paycheck. After an eventful
youth in features his career had pretty much petered out with nothing
more than a few bit parts here and there. Dempsey will turn to
television playing a doctor in the series pilot "Surgeons"
for ABC. He'll play Derek, a surgeon and attending physician
supervising the shows interns.
Mar
11: Touching Evil: USA Network
will be slamming fans with another off the wall series very soon. On
Friday, March 12th fans will be able to catch Touching Evil from
Cheyenne Enterprises, owned by Bruce Willis - who loved the British
version. Jeffrey Donovan will star as Dave Creegan with Vera Farmiga
as his skeptical partner Susan Branca
Mar
9: Anger Reborn?: There is a
rumor over at the City of Angels forum that the WB has signed Angel up
for a sixth season providing that the ratings continue to increase.
The near 2 million signatures from the online petition may also have
something to do with the complete turn-a-round at the network. Rumor
or Fact? Time will tell...
Mar
9: Enterprise Move: Don't
forget that beginning this Wednesday night, March 10th, will have
Enterprise in its new 9pm timeslot. The next six weeks will be
repeats.
Mar
9: The Dead Zone: Sarah Wynter
from the series 24, will guest star in a six-episode arc of the hit
series The Dead Zone. The new season will launch in June 2004. Filming
begins in Vancouver this week.
Mar
9: C.S.I. New York: CBS and
Bruckheimer continue to pull movie actors to television for their hit
series. C.S.I. landed William Peterson and C.S.I. Miami took on David
Caruso as their leads. C.S.I. New York will follow the same formula
using Gary Sinise as their lead actor in CBS' new series.
Mar
9: Daredevil 2: Now Ben
Affleck may be ready to done the cowl again as Daredevil, BUT - only
if this film is much darker than the original. On the directing side
of things, MOVIEHOLE.NET is
reporting that Hellboy helmer Guillermo del Toro may be interested in
taking the reins of the film. The story will only present about 10% of
the film with Affleck actually wearing the costume. He would be
fighting evil in civilian clothes. How exciting is that?
Mar
9: What Are They?: Some comic
book characters are really missing from the mix of feature film
projects. Where the hell is Aquaman, the Green Lantern, Hawkeye, The
Flash, the Avengers, The Invaders, The Inhumans, The Justice League of
America (what a chance for DC Comics to take on the X-Men), Teen
Titans, and others? The DC characters are just being squated on by
Warner Bros, who owns the comic book, while they pound Batman and
Superman down our throats.
Mar
9: Simpson Roles: Jessica
Simpson tells MTV that she is up for the roles of Daisy Duke in the
Dukes of Hazzard, and Jeannie in I Dream of Jeannie. Man, that would
be screwed up either way.
Mar
9: Furious 3: Vin Diesel is
now telling producers that if they want him on the film, Director Rob
Cohen has to helm the project.
Mar
9: Spiderman 3: Sam Raimi
appears to be on board for the third film along with the main actors.
Apparently all the stars are signed for three films.
Mar
9: Logan's Run: Matt Damon may
be the top actor for the lead in Logan's Run, which is being helm by
Bryan Singer.
Mar
7: JAG Soars: Despite being
nine years old, and nearing its 200th episode J.A.G. continues to do
extremely well in the ratings. After its first season NBC canceled the
series, but CBS quickly picked up the series. Once CBS recast the
female lead with Catherine Bell, the rest is history. JAG airs on
Friday nights - a night difficult to get viewers. Fans of the series
would love to see seasonal boxed sets, but CBS seems to have little
interest in it.
Mar
7: Firefly Dough: Universal
has set the budget for the new feature film at just $35 million.
Mar
7: Harry Potter: Author J.K.
Rowlings had intended for the Harry Potter novels to end at seven,
when he graduates from School. After a fan asked about novels covering
the period following Harry's graduation, Rowlings said she didn't
think so, but it could happen. What else in her life will she ever
write that will be as popular or well received as this character. What
are the chances of her creating another cash cow like this one? Slim
and none. You don't walk away from what makes you rich and keeps you
famous. Of course, if the cast of Friends can walk away from $1
million per episode ($24 million each per year) anything is possible.
Mar
6: Logan's Run: Warner Bros.
Pictures has hired Bryan Singer to helm a remake of the classic sci-fi
film Logan's Run with producer Joel Silver. Singer will do this
project before helming the the third X-Men feature. He is already
working with his X2 production designer, Guy Dyas, to create some new
visual world. The project is being fast tracked by Warner Bros. so
that production will begin this year. Singer is currently writing the
script with the help of Paul Todisco and Ethan Gross.
Mar
6: Anonymous Rex: The Sci-Fi
Channel has signed Daniel Baldwin and Sam Trammell to star in their
telefilm Anonymous Rex, which is of course a back door pilot for a
potential series. Joe Menosky (the Dead Zone) wrote the films script
based on the novel Casual Rex from author Eric Garcia. Production
begins March 22 in Toronto with director Julian Jerrold at the helm.
This project floated around the network in development for over a
year.
Mar
6: Tru Calling: Eliza Dushku's
new series "Tru Calling" is also on the bubble of
cancellation this season along with Enterprise. Angel has already
gotten the stake.
Mar
6: Man-Thing: Lion's Gate
doesn't appear to excited with the completed feature Man-Thing. The
production company has pulled the feature film from it scheduled
release date. This could mean a direct to video release, or
simply a rescheduling of the film for more receptive date.
Mar
6: Sword of Dracula: There
just isn't enough blood suckers to go around these days. Image Comics
has sold the feature rights to their comic "Sword of
Dracula" to Daybreak Productions and Prime Universe Productions.
A video game is also in the works from Critical Mass Interactive,
which just purchased the video-game rights.
Mar
5: Angel Done: UPN made
official what everyone already knew. They have passed on picking up
the WB Canceled series Angel. UPN's decision comes from the cost of
producing the episodes, which was deemed excessive. Angel's latest
episode narrowly beat Enterprises ratings. UPN has had trouble picking
up a follow-up series to Enterprise, and Angel would have been a great
fit. UPN is asking fans to stop sending in messages. It will not
change their position. They never really considered picking up the
show.
Mar
5: Azati Prime: Enterprises
final sweeps episode before six weeks of reruns in a new timeslot was
outstanding. Why would it be? Well, it was written by Odyssey 5
creator Manny Coto. If more episodes where this far off the Star Trek
franchise scale of normalcy the series wouldn't be wondering about
cancellation. My only problem with the story was more friggin' time
travel.
Mar
5: Kingdom Hospital Needs Surgery:
Despite the strong ratings for ABC, The two-hour premiere of the
supernatural series was boring and the characters so weird you can't
find anything interesting to care about in them. It will be
interesting to see how the series does over the next few
episodes.
Mar
5: UPN Sweeps: UPN is learning
that Sci-Fi Sucks, and comedies win. The network had a great February
sweeps beating the WB. Ratings for UPN were up 13% overall while the
WB were down 4%, giving UPN a 17% growth on them. From the same time
last year UPN is up by just a .3 rating share, while the WB is
actually down by a rating of .45. This season the networks finished up
the sweep with .01 of each other. UPN's key to success has been its
comedy line-up and dwindling genre shows.
Mar
5: Moogie Passes: Cecily Adams
played Quarks mother Moogie in a few episodes of Deep Space Nine. The
actress has lost her battle with cancer on March 3rd. RIP Ms.
Adams.
Mar
5: Final Countdown on DVD:
It's finally coming to DVD. The B-Movie action flick starring Kirk
Douglas, and right wing asshole Martin Sheen is an awesome piece of
military work. Unlike Top Gun, the fight scenes were real. The scene
with the Japanese Zeros and the F15 were done using the real thing.
It's a very cool scene and the movie is excellent. This is a must have
for genre fans as well as military fans too. The DVD only gets a B
rating for quality and sound, but that's still better than any cut on
VHS. Fans will love the disc. And yes, it will be letterbox widescreen.
Mar
3: Kingdom Hospital Tonight: Don't
forget to tune in to ABC's premiere of Kingdom Hospital at 9pm. The
series stars Andrew McCarthy, who was part of the 80's rat pack. Other
stars include Ed Begley Jr. (St. Elswhere, Battlestar Galactica), and
Bruce Davison.
Mar
3: Enterprise Season 4: Rick
Berman is talking about Enterprise again. He was nice enough to say
that if season 4 happens the series will continue with story arcs, and
not merely stand alone episodes. We'll even get some more Xindi
crap. Season 3 will not end in a cliffhanger episode. Expectations of
cancellation loom. The series has no better than a 50/50 chance.
Mar
3: Enterprise & Time Travel:
God you get sick of Rick Berman and his constant rehashing of old
stuff. Once again we see time travel in the episode E squared.
Enterprise comes in contact with another Enterprise three generations
into the future who's doing some time travel stuff of their own.
Mar
3: Last New Enterprise: It
appears that tonight's action packed episode, Azati Prime will be the
shows last new episode for about six weeks. New Episodes are slated to
return April 21st with the episode Damage. From there the remaining
six episodes should air.
Mar
3: Power Man: Director John
Singleton is negotiating with Columbia Pictures to develop and helm
Marvel's Luck Cage, Hero For Hire. Looks like another role for Michael
Clarke Duncan, who recently played the Kingpin in Daredevil.
Mar
3: Firefly In 2005: The
series which couldn't find an audience has been given the greenlight
by Universal Pictures for a big screen run. The feature title
Serenity, will reunite the crew of Firefly on a script from series
creator Joss Whedon. (variety) Whedon will also helm the
project.
Mar
3: Mortal Kombat: Fans hoping
for a third Mortal Kombat feature are likely disappointed at the news
the proposed film will not be happening. New Line Cinema, which
produced the first two films no longer has the feature rights to the
franchise. At one time it was a priority for Threshold Entertainment,
but has recently drifted off the radar. Screenwriter McWeeny says the
project still may happen, but it could be a bit down the road and
would likely be based on the game MK:DA. (darkhorizons.com)
Mar
3: Warlord of Mars: Spy Kids
director Robert Rodriguez has signed on with Paramount to helm a
live-action adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs awesome novel series
John Carter: The Warlord of Mars. Rodriguez will do the first novel in
the series titled John Carter of Mars. Disney gave up the rights to
the novels in 2002, which allowed Paramount to pick them up.
Production will begin when Rodriguez wraps on his new Sin City
project. One of the best series of novels I have ever read.
Mar
3: Stargate: Atlantis: The crew for the new series has been hired and here they
are...
Torri Higginson - Dr. Elizabeth Weir
Joe Flanagan - Major John Sheppard
Rainbow Sun Francks - Lt. Aiden Ford
David Hewitt - Dr. Rodney McKay
Rachel Luttrell - (Teyla)
(Gateworld.net)
NOTE:
X-Files star Robert Patrick will co-star in the 2 hour premiere. The
45 year old actor will play Colonel Marshall Sumner.
Mar
3: Alias Gets TNT: The
Superstation TNT has gotten a hold on the rights to the syndication
run of ABC's semi-hit series "ALIAS". The cable network
purchased the rights to daytime broadcast for just $200,000 per
episode. It will joined their daytime line-up which includes Angel,
NYPD Blue, and Law & Order in 2005. They have already secured the
rights to Without a Trace. The reason for the cheaper price on
Alias is likely due to the fact that the series are not self contained
episodes. Alias has a continuous story arc, which the others do not.
Mar
3: Campbell and Ash: Bruce
Campbell may be returning in two new features as his Evil Dead
character Ash. New Line Cinema is negotiating with Sam Raimi to borrow
the Ash character for a Freddy vs Jason vs Ash feature film. In return
Raimi wants a fourth solo Ash film - and he will likely get it.
Mar
3: Dr. Vegas: Las Vegas, at
least the name, appears to be a hot commodity for television recently.
First we had CSI, the Las Vegas and now Dr. Vegas. Rob Lowe has signed
on to the pilot about a house doctor at a Las Vegas casino for CBS.
Wonder if this one will actually be filmed here? Doubtful.
Mar
2: 11 For 11: Lord of the
Rings scored last night taking 11 awards for their 11 nominations,
including Best Picture. Again director Peter Jackson looked like shit.
You would think the guy could clean up for the awards shows. That's
not asking or expecting to much.
