Sept
30: Lost: The second episode of the new series has aired. It was
as intriguing as the first. LOST is a quality piece of work for ABC.
That doesn't mean the series will be a hit however. Good doesn't mean
audience participation. But if you are looking for good drama with
some action thrown in, LOST
could be the series for you. It airs Wednesday nights at 8pm on ABC.
ABC will repeat the first two episodes back to back Saturday night.
Don't mess it.
Sept
30: Kevin Hill: The new UPN series starring Taye Diggs premiered
last night at 9pm. I'm not sure if CBS was worried or not, but they
aired a special episode of C.S.I. at their 9pm timeslot. Kevin
Hill has potential to be an excellent drama series for UPN if some
fans tune in.
Sept
30: Aeon Flux: Production resumes on Aeon Flux come Monday morning
after being halted when star Charlize Theron got hurt doing some wire
work on a trampoline.
Sept
30: James Bond Delayed: Eon Productions and MGM have done a fairly shitty
job with James Bond over the past years. The films have done well, but
could have been so much better. Now comes word that MGM will delay another
James Bond until maybe 2006. The studio is currently in the
process of being purchased by Sony, so feature negotiations have been
put on hold for the last five months.
Sept
30: Bad Vice News: There is some bad news brewing on the Miami
Vice feature front. Jamie Foxx is actually being considered for the
role of Ricardo Tubbs, played so gracefully by Philip Michael Thomas
in the series. Mann recently directed Foxx in the feature
"Collateral". (moviehole.net)
Sept
30: Magnum PI: Tom Selleck appears heavily involved in the feature
film. The actor has input on the script and tone of the film. So, as
you can tell the film is still in the scripting stages.
Sept
30: Star Wars: The Series: Man Star Wars fans are a bit upset to
learn that Kevin Smith's name is being rumored to head the new series.
Lucas likes Smith and could pass the Wars TV torch to the
director/writer.
Sept
30: More Wars Films: Despite George Lucas' denial of more Star
Wars films, the word on the street is that there are indeed plans in
the works for three more features.
Sept
30: More AvsP: Previous announcement talked of separate Alien and
Predator features. Now director Paul Anderson tells the Dread Central
website that Fox is making noise now about a possible sequel. The
feature film has opened to large numbers in every country so far. AvsP
could be the highest grossing film of either franchise to date. (moviehole.net)
Sept
30: CSI: NY: The latest installment seems just as dominating as
the first two. NBC thought it smart to put it Law & Order (which
has spawned two spin-off series also) against the new CSI series.
Their attempt has backfired as CSI: NY has dominated the timeslot for
the first two-weeks of the new season and the numbers are likely to
get better over the rest of the season.
Sept
26: Top Cartoons: Who's tops of the 80's in the cartoon world? Top
minds just might want to know. They aren't some obscure cartoons you won't remember. HeMan and the Masters of the Universe ruled the
80's until 1987. He was
the hero who fought off G.I. Joe, Optimus Prime and the Transformers
and even Voltron from the top spot. HeMan aired in 32 countries and
earned over one billion dollars in toys sales for the toy company
"Mattel". Unfortunately cartoons fade and by the late
80's these heroes of the animated airwaves had fallen from favor. Kids
were ready to move on. From the ashes rose "The Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles" created by Kevin Eastman and Peter
Laird. These "Heroes in a Half Shell" earned over one
billion dollars in toy sales and spawned three live action feature
films. They ruled the cartoon highway like no other anime' could. It's
turtle power dudes! It just isn't the same today with kids flocking to
a sponge named Bob and some girls who are powder puffs. I'll take Johnny Quest,
the Herculoids and the original Scooby Doo any day. Wile E. Coyote,
are you out there? What about these guys... Space Ghost, Thundar the
Barbarian, Dungeons & Dragons, Spiderman & his Amazing
Friends, Bravestar and the Real Ghostbusters.
Sept
26: Jerry O'Connell: The main man from Sliders, Jerry O'Connell
had turned his recurring role on Crossing Jordan into a full time job
this season. After turning down a long term contract for a serious
role on CSI: New York City working under Gary Sinise. (O'Connell
worked with Sinise on the feature "Mission to Mars". )
Sept
26: Williams Joins NBC: Actress and Singer Vanessa Williams
(Eraser) has inked a deal with NBC to add her name to a long list of
daytime talk show hosts. (Hollywood Reporter) I'll watch just to see
her.
Sept
25: Terminator 4 Gets Ready: Production is gearing up for the
fourth Terminator installment in early 2005. What about the cast...
who knows. Neither Clair Danes or Nick Stahl were signed for T4. Talks
have begun with Schwarzenegger on a possible cameo appearance as well
as with Jonathan Mostow to take the helm again. Mostow
will direct a film by Paramount before taking the reins to T4.
Sept
25: Earthsea a Tapping: The Sci-Fi Channel has added a guest
appearance by Stargate SG-1's Amanda Tapping during their mini-series
"Earthsea". She will play the ghost of Lady Elfarran who
appears to the main character early in the mini.
Sept
25: Enterprise on DVD: Fans of the series will see the series four
season during 2005. The announcement could come before the end of
October from Paramount. (thedigitalbits.com)
Sept
24: Lost Scores Big: ABC's new series premiere of LOST scored
decent on Wednesday night earning a 6.8 rating (that's 18.7 million
viewers). While the ratings are no juggernaut, it was a great premiere
for ABC, even though "The Pretender" got the axe with 6.5
ratings at the shows end.
Sept
24: CSI: NY: CSI: New York can say it kicked the shit out of Law
& Order. CSI drew 19.3 million viewers while L&O sifted out
15.4 million.
Sept
24: Hawaii Doomed: Typhoon up the ass is more like it. The shows
writing is so bad nothing else can save Hawaii. If you like the show,
plan for the worst. You can expect this one to enter the hiatus void
at any moment. The writing for the show is horrific.
Sept
24: Veronica Mars: This lame series from UPN is essentially the
replacement series for last years "Jake 2.0", which was
decent television series. The ratings for Veronica Mars premiere was
lower than that of Jake 2.0. Can you say... toast.
Sept
24: Reaper: Media 8 Entertainment has purchased the feature film
rights, including producing and distribution to the Sci-Fi feature
REAPER. Production is already slated to begin in February. A Private
Detective finds himself immersed in a surreal underworld where the
differences between life and death become blurred. (variety)
Sept
24: Hellboy 2 Delayed: The sequel to Hellboy is being pushed back
so that director Guillermo del Toro can take on another project first.
The delay is expected to be about a year-and-a-half.
Sept
24: Stargate SG-1 Meets Farscape: Actress Claudia Black from the
hit cancelled series Farscape will land in an episode of Stargate SG-1
titled "Prometheus Unbound". She'll play a character named
Vala. Black will also be re-appearing in the Farscape mini-series as
Aeryn Sun
Sept
24: Anonymous Rex: The new two-hour telefilm slash back door pilot
titled Anonymous Rex is slated to air on the Sci-Fi Channel, or
Stargate Channel as many call it, on November 19th. The telefilm is
based on the novel series by Eric Garcia about private investigators
who are actually dinosaurs masquerading on Earth as human beings. The
private eyes investigate the death of another investigator in the
pilot. (futon critic)
Sept
24: Star Wars Saps: Yeah, that would be America. George has hacked
and slashed the original Star Wars trilogy while we all bitched,
moaned and complained all the way to Wallmart. I was one too. Walking
through Wallyworld I couldn't resist picking up that ugly $40 boxed
set. What a sucker we all are. Lucas and Fox sucked up $115 million on
just the first day of sales - and we didn't even get the original
films.
Sept
20: Disney: After running the last of the Disney clan out of town,
Disney's CEO Michael Eisner has announced that he'll resign in
two-years when his current contract expires. Eisner has tarnished the
Disney image while he's been the CEO. The franchise is so huge it
could be years before they fell the effects of his poor management
tactics.
Sept
20: Weak Box Office: A good weekend at the box office was expected
with Mr. 3000, Sky Captain and Wimbledon joining Cellular and Resident
Evil. That wasn't the case however as Sky Captain opened with just
$16.2 million and Mr. 3000 a distant second with just over $9 million.
Looks like many movie goers found something else to do over the
weekend. A $16 million opening is bad, but I thought the film would do
much better along with Resident Evil 2 - which lost 60% of it's first
week audience to make just $9 million ($37 million over the first two
weeks.)
Sept
20: Quantum Leap: The Sci-Fi Channel is developing a telefilm/
possible series based on the original series Quantum Leap which
starred Scott Bakula. The network is planning to re-imagine the series
as they did with Battlestar Galactica. If the network doesn't get the
project off the ground within the few weeks creator Donald P.
Bellesario and Bakula will attempt to bring QL to the big screen by
2006. (IESB)
Sept
20: Star Wars TV: George Lucas has confirmed the new television
series based on the universe he created. Luckily for fans, Lucas will
not be heading up the new series. No official word on when the series
would premiere. HBO or Showtime would be a much better place for an
adult oriented project.
Sept
16: Ghost in the Shell 2: The new adult oriented animated feature
"Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence" from Dreamworks opens in
theaters tomorrow, Sept. 17th. The new feature will get the largest
opening ever for an adult-oriented animated movie in the U.S. Check
the official Go Fish website for more info on the film. CLICK
HERE for their website.
Sept
16: It's Sky Captain Time: Sky Captain and the World of
Tomorrow actually opens tomorrow in theaters. Check local theaters and
listings for times in your area.
Sept
16: The Rock is Doomed: Dwayne Johnson, aka the Rock, has signed
on the dotted line to star in the upcoming video game turned action
movie "Doom". The Rock now has the video game "Spy
Hunter" and "Doom" on his chart. Doom follows an
expanding list of video games turn live action movie. Most of them
haven't done well at the box office. Also signing to co-star with the
Rock is Karl Urban (Bourne Identity) as an assassin.
Sept
16: Jeremiah May Live On: Executive Producer Scott Rosenberg told
the Sci-Fi Wire Jeremiah may have some life left after its two-hour
season ending run on Showtime. Unfortunately if Showtime sticks to
their guns about NO third season it will continue in an electronic
comic book form only. If the ratings are good Rosenberg is hoping that
Showtime will give the series a third season even without J. Michael
Stracynski. Chances for that are so very small.
Sept
16: Ghost Rider: The new Ghost Rider film is now scheduled to
begin filming in January down in Australia with a summer 2006 release
planned. It is unlikely now that Nicolas Cage will star. The studio is
reportedly interested in someone younger in the lead role.
Sept
16: Foundation Attacks Sharks: The Columbus Citizens Foundation
has attacked Dreamworks for their new animated feature Shark Tale.
They are outraged that the film depicts Italian Americans in a bad
way. Ohhh, it's not politically correct? What a load of dog shit. I
have two letters for that "Fuck" and "You". :O)
Of course Dreamworks said it in a nice way. How come they
aren't all over the Sapranos? Why aren't they trying to get the
Godfather films pulled off the video shelves? No, they have to go
after a childs cartoon.
Sept
16: Tru Calling Pulled: Fox has had second thoughts about the
second year series Tru Calling. They have pushed the season premiere
to mid-season and are considering a change from l3 episodes to just 6.
This is what Hiatus is all about. The word on the street (I like that)
comes down to the shows budget and the fact that Fox is in its
"Reality Show Phase" and could get the same ratings with a
cheaper budgeted reality show.
Sept
16: The Dukes Suck: You already know the new Dukes Of Hazzard
feature film will be a box office flop before it ever gets made. Now
the truth is out. Actress, I use the term so very loosely, Jessica
Simpson has signed on to play the role of Daisy Duke. "Flop Flop,
Piss Piss, Oh what a shitty film this is'"
Sept
16: 4400 Hold Up: Why no word on the renewal of USA networks hit
series 4400? Well, one obstacle is money, of course. None of the cast
was signed beyond the six-hour mini-series. That could raise
production costs to about $1.5 million per episode. The second
stalling point is that the USA network and Paramount Network
Television are arguing over broadcast rights. NBC Universal, which
owns the USA Network, wants the rights to rebroadcast the episodes on
one of their affiliates should they decided to do so, for a nominal
fee. Paramount, which is owned by Viacom/CBS doesn't want the series
to end up on CBS as as a mid-season replacement series. Viacom is also
stressing that the deal with USA was done before the merger with NBC.
If this deal does not work out the USA Network could then actually
shop the around to NBC Universal. USA wants the deal done quickly so
they can get another 13 episodes done for their summer 2005
premiere.
Sept
11: The Punisher Sells: The Thomas Jane/ John Travolta film didn't
set the box office on fire, but the Punisher DVD/VHS did sell 1.8
million copies
in the first five days. The makes it one of the best selling features
of the year, despite making just $33 million at the box office. I
still like the Dolph Lundgren video release only feature better.
Sept
11: Primer: THINKFilm is planning 2 more screenings before their
upcoming release of PRIMER on September 27th and 28th before the New
York City press day . Primer is a prize winner at Sundance that was
done for just $7,000 by writer-director-actor Shane Carruth. Both
screenings will take place in New York on September 23rd. There will
be press days in New York (Sept. 27th), Dallas (Oct. 8th) and Los
Angeles (Oct. 22nd).
Sept
11: Aeon Flux Accident: Actress Charlize Theron was injured again
on the set of Aeon Flux. She returned to Los Angeles on Tuesday (Aug
31) after injuring her neck. She was doing wire work in high heels.
During a somersault she slipped and injured herself. The slip disc
nearly went into her spinal cord. She fine now but it could have been
much worse. Her actor boyfriend Stuart Townsend was worried and told
Theron that the stunt girl is going to start working, and not you.
That's sweet, but it's her career. They aren't married and the
decisions about doing stunts falls completely on Charlize Theron, and
how much she wants to do.
Sept
11: Frank Thomas Passes: Legendary animator Frank Thomas, who
worked on the Snow White, has passed away. The 92 year old died at his
home in Flintridge, California. Thomas also worked on the classics
"Dumbo", "Pinochio", "Sleeping Beauty",
and "Cinderella". Frank Thomas is part of the old Disney
legacy and wonderful talents that worked at the studio.
Sept
11: Charmed Turns 7: Paramount's production of Charmed has
entered it's seventh season on the WB. An eighth remains a strong
possibility as well. Executive producer Brad Kern tells Zap2It.com
that he doesn't have an answer for why the show has had such
longevity. Viewers simply need to watch the show to see the three
pieces of eye candy to know why so many stick around every year. While
the story lines the last two seasons have been bad, the scantly
dressed Alyssa Milano episodes have increased. Skin sells, and Charmed
has three beautiful young woman that actually have some acting talent
when the writers decided to use it.
Sept
9: Aliens & Predators Going Solo: 20th Century Fox is very
happy with the Alien vs Predator success at the box office. While many
critics don't like the sequel it's apparent that fans do. The plan now
is a Predator feature and another Alien feature, but no AVP sequel.
Predator 3 seems to be the hottest project with the story open for a
fourth film with a possible Arnold Schwartzenegger character return.
As for those Alien creatures... we're back to the Ridley Scott /
Sigourney Weaver team-up. This is the time for the Steve Perry Alien
trilogy novels.
Sept
9: Starhunter 2300: The first season boxed set of Starhunter
2300 the series could hit retailers as early as October 12th. Most of
us in the U.S. never even got a chance to see either season. In some
locations it aired on Sundays at midnight. The first season stars
Michael Pare (Philadelphia Experiment) and is totally different from
the second season which was totally revamped and other star brought
in. It is unknown if the boxed set will be the Canadian version or the
edited U.S. version. (TVShowsondvd.com)
Sept
9: Babylon 5 Winners: I don't usually post the winners of the
give-a-ways but what the hell. The B5 season 5 winners are Brian in
Coheos, NY and Phillip in Florence, KY. The B5: Movie Collections go
to Grant in North Borough, MA and Bobby in Rio Rancho, NM. Congrats to the winners. The Wonder Woman season one collections are
on the clock. Enter today to win.
Sept
9: More Dirty Harry: Clint over at Moviehole.net
has info that Warner Bros. is working on a new "Dirty Harry"
feature that will bring back Clint Eastwood as police detective Harry
Callahan. It is rumored to be in the vein of the original
film.
Sept
9: Jurassic Park 4: Moviehole.net also reported a tidbit that
special effects wizard Stan Winston has reported that the script is
finished and plans are to begin production very soon on the
film.
Sept
9: Crappy Hulk Sequel Happening: Movies good. Hulk movie bad.
Sequel... bad. Superhero Hype has some horrible news that the planned
sequel from Marvel just might be moving ahead. Michael France is
slated to do the script and a director could be named soon. Eric Bana
is not looking forward to another box office flop. The Hulk, Troy and
another Hulk feature. Whew! This is a good place for stick up. Wonder
what he wants on his acting tombstone?
Sept
9: MONK: The hit series MONK on the USA Network is retooling the
series. Producers of the series will not be bringing back Bitty Schram,
who played Sharona Fleming. When the series returns in January for the
remained of its third season she will not be there. Casting is
currently underway for a thirty-something actress to play a widow
who's a bartender and takes on the job of working for Adrian
Monk.
Sept
9: The District Returns: Well, in repeats anyways. TNT has picked
up the rebroadcast rights to the cancelled series "The
District". They will add the three season series to its weekday
schedule.
Sept
9: More Rescue Me: The FX network has picked up the second season
of Rescue Me after just five airings and a solid 2.0 rating. 13
episodes in the second season are confirmed with a possible 15 total.
Rescue Me stars Denis Leary, who is also an executive producer with
Jim Serpico and Peter Tolan.
Sept
8: The Scott's at Sci-Fi: Ridley Scott and brother Tony Scott are
joining with the Sci-Fi Channel to produce a remake of the Andromeda
Strain into a four-hour mini-series.
Sept
8: The Thing... Again: Wasn't John Carpenter's "The
Thing" a perfect remake of the 1950's version? Most fans do, but
the Sci-Fi Channel and Frank Darabont believe they can do better in a
new four-hour mini-series. David Leslie Johnson is writing the
adaptation. Frank Darabont co-produced the the 1982 Carpenter
version.
Sept
8: Frankenstein: USA Network has opened a new website for their
upcoming adaptation of Frankenstein. CLICK HERE for the website.
Frankenstein is scheduled to premiere October 9th at 9pm. You start to
wonder how many times you can retell this story and keep people coming
back for more.
Sept
8: Enterprise Doomed: This season was already set to be the final
season of Star Trek: Enterprise. Any hope of a reprieve at the end of
the season went out the door when Paramount Network TV Executive Gary
Hart stepped down. Hart supported the renewal of the series for
another season.
Sept
8: Hawaii Warming Up: The second episode of the new series stepped
up its audience participation by almost 26%. A new episode will
air this Friday night as well.
Sept
8: Star Trek: The Complete Set: Paramount Studios is planning a
complete Star Trek the original series in a 3 season boxed set on
December 14th, just in time for Christmas.
Sept
8: The 4400 on DVD: Paramount is wasting little time getting
"The 4400" to DVD on December 21st.
Sept
8: B5: Crusade: Warner Bros. will complete the final piece of the
Babylon 5 franchise to DVD on December 7th. The four disc boxed set is
to retail at a bit expensive price of... $59.99.
Sept
5: Harry Potter 5: Harry Potter may be getting his first female
director with "The Order of the Phoenix". "Vanity
Fair" director Mira Nair has been offered the directing duties.
She's reading the script but hasn't decided yet. Don't worry she'll do
it. (zap2it.com) It's time to do these films two or three back
to back. Don't ask Kevin Smith to direct it. The project is too
big for him. Just ask him.
Sept
5: Enjoy the weekend from Scifi2k.com
Sept
2: More Underworld: The sequel is slated to begin production in
November. The script is complete and the films first stars are
returning, and they will be getting a few extra bucks in the wallets
as well.
Sept
2: The Original Trek Boxed Set: The first season boxed set of the
original Star Trek series is available on DVD. Costco is selling the
first season for $80.95. The new boxed set comes in a yellow container
that looks pretty cool other than the yellow.
Sept
2: Las Vegas: The second season of Las Vegas starring James Caan
begins Monday, Sept. 13th at 9pm. The series left with the character
Danny, played by Josh DuHamel, leaving the Montecito and heading to
Iraq after the military reinstated him for a an unspecified mission.
He may be slated to return during the first episode of the new season.
Sept
2: Carnivale: Fans of the HBO series should be happy to learn that
the first season boxed set will hit retailers on December 7th for
$99.99. Online shoppers can pick up the set for $69.99 and possibly at
Costco for $74.99.
Sept
2: Should Trek Take a Breather?: This seems to be the pondering
question among everyone attached or familiar with the series. The
franchise doesn't need to rest, it needs to evolve. With Rick Berman
and Brannon Braga the franchise has become stagnant on both the
television and feature film fronts. The franchise needs fresh ideas
and storylines - not to be placed into moth balls for a few years.
Evolve and expand. Hello? Is anyone home? Shit, didn't think so?
Gimmee the keys, I'll drive.
Sept
2: Hellboy: Director Guillermo Del Toro told Empire online that he
would love to do Hellboy as a trilogy... at the least.
Sept
2: Superman: Comic Book writer Mark Millar told the folks over at
the Superherohype website that his learn director Mark Singer has
signed Jim Caviezel (Count of Monte Cristo & Passions of the
Christ) to play Superman. Harry Knowles of Ain't It Cool (that I've
sold out) .com has de-bunct that report but you don't really know till
it becomes official. Caviezel is a quality actor, but he's 37 years
old and that doesn't fit Warner's desire to have the part played by a
twenty-something actor. Millar is positive Caviezel is Superman.
Sept
2: Na-no, Na-no: It is time. The series that put Robin
Williams on the comedy map finally hits retails on September 7th. The
4 disc slim case first season boxed set will cost fans $38.99 with an
online price of $27.29. "Mork calling Orson. Come in
Orson."
Sept
2: At The Box Office: The Jet Li feature "Hero" is
sitting at the top spot. The number two film is the comedy
"Without a Paddle". Tucked right on its ass is
"Princess Diaries 2" which has maintained its audience
appeal while AVP has dropped from number one to number four and now in
the number seven slot. Collateral and Exorcist: The Beginning
are already tumbling their way out of the top ten. The Exorcist flick
is down to number 5 with Collateral in the 6th spot.
Sept
2: Aeon Injured: Charlize Theron was injured on the set of her new
film "Aeon Flux" while performing one her many wire stunts.
The injury was unspecified but it was also reported there were no cuts
or broken bones.
Sept
2: Kevin Smith: This guy can't handle directing a big budget film
like The Green Hornet, but he doesn't mind heading back to his
childish roots with a stupid sequel to "Clerks". I won't
even give the title to the film, because even that isn't original.
Nice work Mr. Smith. Just phone it in from now on. We don't want you
to move forward with your career. Just keep doing the dumb-shit stuff.
Sept
2: Highlander, Animated Style: Not only will there be a fifth live
action flop in the dismal highlander franchise from producer
Davis-Panzer productions, but there is now an animated feature in
development too. It's two, two flops in one. (cinescape)
Sept
2: Area 51: Paramount has decided that the video game "Area
51" deserves the movie treatment too and picked up the feature
film rights. It likely to be a live action film.
Sept
2: Goyer Gets His Deal: Writer David Goyer has now added director
to his resume and signed his second deal with Warner Bros. moving over
from New Line. It's a one-year first-look deal writing,
producing and directing for the studio. Warner has an option to pick
up a two-year extension on the deal if they are happy with his work.
One deal that may be heading his way is a remake of Soylent Green
which originally starred Charleston Heston. (variety)
Sept
2: Doohan Makes Final Appearance: Star Trek's 84 year old Scotty,
James Doohan has made his final public appearance accepting his star
on Hollywoods walk-of-fame. Doohan is suffering from Parkinson's
disease and diabetes. He is also in the early stages of Alzheimer's
disease. Thanks James.
