DARKNETS:
Secret Intranets?
For File Sharing
Fanatics: Any Video or Audio traders out
there? Any worried about getting screwed just for friendly sharing?
Want another option to do what you enjoy, and do it in secrecy? Then
read on Macduff. There is an option called a darknet. An... intranet
created by friends called darknets. Unlike such public networks like
kazaa or Morpheus, which let you share songs with anyone, private
networks operate more like underground nightclubs or secret societies.
To gain access you need to know the name of the group and a password.
And the only way to get that information is from another member who
invites you in. Some darknets even encrypt files and mask your
identity within a group to keep eavesdroppers from finding out who you
are and what you are sharing. Carving out a bit of privacy
online has wide appeal; students community groups and yes, even fucked
up political dissidents can use these hidden networks to share
projects, information, and papers. The biggest part of the allure is
anonymity and the other is exclusivity. Darknets offer the
convenience of the Web without a lot of the bad stuff. You do need
special software to start a darknet of your own. Here's the good
part... the software. The two most popular are Direct Connect by
NeoModus (try neo-modus.com) and an open source variation called DC++,
available for download at sourceforge.net. Are people interested in
this? Oh Yeah! Over 800,000 copies of DC++ have been downloaded since
mid-July. A third program called Waste (also at sourceforge.net)
automatically encrypts files but is much harder to use. Generally
these small communities are faster than Kazaa bacause private networks
are smaller and generally all its members use high-speed connections.
Not if, but when the music industry and Movie studios come down on the
darknets they will find itself chasing users that are much harder to
catch. (From a story in Time Magazine)

New Show Rumors.
Projects that
have been bought, are being developed or discussed at the studios for
the future. Does not guarantee any of them will go into production.
* STAR WARS: ???: Will
move forward full speed following the release the Sith film. Kevin Smith will
writer and supervise the series. ILM may do the special effects and Mark
Hamill returns as... Luke Skywalker. The series hasn't been sold to a network
as of yet. I am hoping for pay cable.

* Action
Heroes Inc.: ABC put Action Heroes Inc. into development back in May 2004.
The project could become a movie of the week franchise if successful. The plot
follows a trio of ex-tv heroes who join together to open a detective agency and
solve cases by playing the roles that made them famous. Set to star are Lee
Majors (Six Million Dollar Man), William Shatner (Star Trek, TJ Hooker), and
Robert Wagner (Hart to Hart). This should be ready for the 2004/2005
season.
* Astronauts: ABC: The ABC pilot
telefilm coming in at about $3.5M will be directed by Robert Harmon and star
Jeffrey Pierce, Yvette Nipar, Chris Potter, Bobby Hosea, and Jonathan Banks.
The series, if it happens, follows the Russians and Americans as they decide to
play fair and work together with their space programs. This sounds like 'the
Fugitive' series. Expensive pilot and a series that bombs.
* Brothers Grimm: ABC: ABC has ordered a pilot for "The Brother's Grimm" which will "focus on
two modern-day siblings who discover they're descendants of the original
Grimm brothers and find themselves enmeshed in fantastic or fairy tale-related mysteries and situations"
* E.I.S.: ABC: A new series
for ABC about the foot soldiers of the Center for Disease Control. The
new CSI style clone will star Adam Goldberg (as a infectious disease
specialist), D.B. Woodside, and Billy Burke. (hollywood reporter) This
almost sounds like a remake of UPN's short lived series 'the Burning
Zone'. Series looks dead.
* Fathom: ABC: Mysterious creatures inhabit the depths of the
ocean from writer/directors Josh and Jonas Pate. Scheduled for 2005. Did not
make the 2005/2006 pilot schedule.
* Paranormal
Girl:
ABC:from Touchstone, about a
teen-age girl who discovers she has weird powers and is recruited by
the FBI to help solve crimes.
*
Speed: ABC: ABC has
ordered a pilot script from producer Mark Gordon based on the 1994 feature,
"SPEED". The series will take place five years before Speed and deal
with the relationship between the characters played by Keanu Reeves and Jeff
Daniels. Graham Yost wrote the script for the first film and will now
executive produce along with Gordon.

* Arthur:
NBC: What's it about: a look at the famed king's early
years (with wasilewski as lancelot and morris as arthur) before his
fateful encounter with the sword in the stone who's in it: paul wasilewski
("wolf lake"), julian morris, james hoare, stephen
billington, tony mandsley, laura rees, david birkin, adrian lukis,
desmond barrit, patrick gordon, mark tandy, clive swift who's making
it: graham yost ("the last castle," "band of
brothers"), remi aubuchon ("jack & jill")
* Carrie:
NBC: A pilot commitment has been given for a fall 2002
consideration. The series would center on a teen-age girl with special
powers.
* Earth Angels:
NBC: Word has it that
the NBC-TV network has given the go ahead on an unnamed pilot created
by author Anne Rice. According to NY Daily News columnist Mitchell
Fink, the project will star Timothy Hutton and will be a good against
evil story about angels at war on Earth. The pilot was done. The pilot
may air during the summer 2002 lull (summer) (This
one was in contention until the end, but did not get picked up.)
*
Journeyman: NBC: Kevin McKidd (HBO's Rome) has joined the cast of
NBC's Journeyman, the 20th Century Fox TV SF drama pilot about a man
who travels back in time to fix events, including those in his own life.
McKidd will next be seen in Hannibal Rising.
* Lost In Space: NBC: NBC appears
be developing a 'Lost In Space' mini-series. It may include several
members of the original series passing off the torch to a whole new
family 'Lost In Space'. NBC has commisioned a two-hour script. If successful could
always lead to a new series. (NBC has pulled the plug on this
one, due to production costs)
*
Raines:
NBC: Actor Jeff Goldblum's new NBC series has him playing an eccentric cop who
talks to dead people to solve crimes. Raines is part of NBC's 2006 line-up.
Success rating for the series - "C". It's been done twice already.
* Spy Girl:
NBC: Designed to star 'LeFemme
Nakita's Peta Wilson'. A romantic mystery drama pilot about a twentysomething Ivy League grad who
joins a private investigation agency. Once there, a romance develops between her and another
P.I. Originally hope for in 2k1, but not likely now. DEAD
* Time Tunnel: NBC: This project
is in development even though FoX is doing one based on the series.
NBC's will be based on the Novel 'Time Tunnel'. This project has been
put on hold by the network. DEAD
* V: The Second Generation: NBC: Kenneth
Johnson has reported that NBC is developing the V: mini-series franchise into
a third go around. Likely due to the recent success of TAKEN on the Sci-Fi Channel,
Johnson reports that things have really turned things up and things are in
development. NBC and Warner are talking with Johnson about a 3 to 4 hour sequel. Johnson
will release more information when the film has producer and an
official air date. Johnson hopes that some stars from the
original will resume their roles for the mini-series. (note: NBC
and the other networks have passed on the project citing a not so good
script for the time.) NBC continues to hope for a better script from K.
Johnson.

* The Boston Strangler: CBS: Telefilm based on new
documents uncovered by journalist Lawrence Schiller about the notorious figure
that include witness reports accusing another person.
* The Culpepper Cattle Company: CBS: Western: Stars Emmy Award-winner Tom
Selleck ("Magnum, P.I.") as a cattle drive boss who mysteriously
comes out of retirement to look for work. Cap Mabrey (Selleck) was once the
best cattle drive boss in the West, but he stopped working for hire after he
had raised enough money to buy his own cattle concern. When he returns to
Little Aberdeen, Texas, looking for a job, it takes the townspeople by
surprise. Known and respected for his cattle sense and for being a man of
principle, Cap lands a job but is forced to take on a rough, untrained boy as
one of his cowhands when help is scarce. The drive itself is hard work, but
even a man of Cap?s skill and principles is challenged by the new wave of
settlers who are mostly fortune seekers in pursuit of land and prestige that
threaten the cowboy way of life. Adding to his personal struggle, Cap battles
a growing attachment to the boy who threatens to break open the secret behind
Cap?s return.
*
E.S.P.ers: CBS: Ex-Trek
producer Ira Behr and Seinfeld's Jason Alexander are developing a new
Sci-Fi series for CBS titled 'E.S.P.ers', for CBS. 20th Century Fox will
produce the proposed series, and have a script commitment from the
network. Yes, it is another paranormal series. This one about a paranormal
detective.
* Jekyll & Hyde: CBS:
Shaun Cassidy and Sam Raimi, who teamed up for the series
"American Pie" are teaming again for CBS to create an
latter-day Jekyll/Hyde series. The new series will revolve around a
forensic psychiatrist. Cassidey will write the pilot and executive
produce along with Raimi and David Eick. Raimi will NOT be directing.
* Jericho: CBS:
Jericho," from CBS Paramount Network Television, revolves around
a small town in Kansas that's dealing with life after a series of
nuclear attacks destroys most of America's big cities. The show's
ensemble cast includes Alicia Coppola ("N.C.I.S."), Ashley
Scott ("Birds of Prey"), Erik Knudsen ("Saw II"),
Gerald McRaney ("Deadwood"), Kenneth Mitchell
("Miracle"), Lennie James ("Sahara"), Michael
Gaston ("Prison Break"), Pamela Reed ("Pepper
Dennis"), Skeet Ulrich ("Into the West") and Sprague
Grayden ("Over There"). Stephen Chbosky created the hour,
which also comes from executive producer/director Jon Turteltaub.
* The Afterlife (FOX) - FOX has
ordered a pilot presentation of the project, a digitally animated comedy about
a family that dies from a freak photography accident and winds up in
purgatory, which looks a lot like suburban Los Angeles. Barry Bostwick
("Spin City"), Kerri Kenney ("The Ellen Show"), Alexandra
Holden ("Ally McBeal") and Danny Strong ("Buffy the Vampire
Slayer") will voice the father, mother and children respectively.
Threshold Entertainment's Larry Kasanoff ("Foodfight") will
executive produce the project for his Threshold Digital Research Labs. Joshua
Wexler co-created the series with writers David Schneiderman and Derek Guiley.
* Battlestar Galactica:
Fox & SFC:
Bryan Singer will direct the pilot movie and serve as co-executive
producer with Tom DeSanto. The pilot and series will air on FOX and
the Sci-Fi Channel splitting the window. Some of the 70's characters
will be involved in the new series mixed with young talent. Fox has
already ordered the two-hour pilot movie. It was hoped that UPN would
step up and grab the series. (Series on
HOLD by Fox after Singer backed out due to scheduling conflicts with
X-Men 2. Likely will never happen now) Bet they wish they had
done it now, after the success of the show on the Sci-Fi Channel.
* Darkside: Fox: Variety described the premise of DARKSIDE
as being similar in concept to ABC's hit LOST. The story concerns a
team of astronauts that discover a mysterious SOS signal eminating from the

and Tony Scott.
* Time Tunnel: Fox: a pilot telefilm and possible series based on the

religion and politics would change forever; families would mourn lost

focus on the lives of two families -- the Adamas (ancestors of future
Galactica commander William) and the Graystones. Humankind's Twelve Colonies
are at peace and on the verge of a technological breakthrough: the first
Cylon. As "Battlestar Galactica" is about a lot more than space

* Aquaman: WB:
A new Smallville style series could go into dvelopment based
on the comic book character. The ratings for Aquaman's appearance on
Smallville were outstanding.
* Bruce Wayne:
WB: Still in development, but unlikely to happen is a series
revolving around a young Bruce Wayne similar to Smallville. It would
be doubtful that fans would ever see Wayne wear the cape and cowl.
DEAD (for now)
* CHiPs: WB: a return to the 1970's

* Dragon Riders of Pern:
WB: SERIES
IS DEAD: Warner Brothers pulled the plug on this one two
days before filming began. Moore wanted a classy interesting show and
Warner Brothers wanted to create another Buffy/ Xena-esque type
series. The new
Ronald Moore series from the Anne McCaffrey novels is scheduled to
begin production end of March, early April. The series, which has no
cast of filming locations, will be live action with CGI dragons. Says
Moore of the series, "The show will be an interpretation of
Anne's books, my take on Anne's world. It how I see it successfully
moving into television. They are planning to push the envelope on what
they can do on TV and deliver creatures that haven't been seen before.
The central character will be Lessa, daughter of a noble family from
Ruatha Hold (from Dragonflight). Her family is killed, and she
journeys with F'Lar, F'Nor and Kylara to Bendan Weyr to reclaim her
title and eventually return as a dragonrider. This is a big project
for Moore to get to the small screen by the fall. But I sure hope he
makes it. Dragonriders of Pern is a great series of books. (scifi

* Electra Woman & Dyna Girl:
WB: WB-TV has ordered a pilot for a new version of "Electra Woman and Dyna Girl" that will be penned by Elisa Bell and Jeff Kline. While the old ABC
version was about two magazine reporters, the revised take will have a young

becomes her "Dyna Girl." (sftv news) Makie Post (night court) has been

* Planetary:
WB in 2002?: Comics writer/creator Warren Ellis has revealed that there
may be a TV series in the works based on his Planetary comic book series.
DC/Wildstorm have sold a development option on Planetary to Warner Brothers Television. Warner Brothers TV now have a period
of time in which to develop Planetary as a TV show aimed at a 2002 release. Understand,
they've simply bought the
rights to develop the show. There is no guarantee that a Planetary TV show would ever even get in front of a
camera...The person behind this drive at WB is one of their VP`s of drama development. Therefore, this is not an
animated series they're looking at, but a live-action series. DEAD
* Sabrina Spin-off Series:
WB: Warner
Brothers is considering a mid-season or 2k1 fall season, show based on
a character from the show. (DEAD)

But the new version of the series will focus on MacGyver's nephew.
"Young MacGyver" will follow the twentysomething hero as he
leaves school and winds up joining the Phoenix Foundation -- the
good-guy organization his uncle belonged to -- on a lark. Once there,
he discovers that he's incredibly adept at stepping into Uncle
MacGyver's shoes. MacGyver is being targeted for the 2003 fall
schedule. Jared Padalecki, who plays Dean Forester on fellow WB show
"Gilmore Girls," has nabbed the coveted role in the WB's
Paramount- produced "MacGyver" project. (Project Dead)

SYNDICATED,
CABLE, & Misc. SERIES
What is being considered. Still might happen.
With syndication first run series timeslots disappearing most of these
series will NOT be going into production. NOTE:
Most Syndicated Timeslots are now strictly
used for repeats of hit series and no first run syndicated
programming.
* Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Series: Pilot from FOX.

* Area 23: 'Area 23' is the
Pentagon sanctioned program that houses the Pys Ops Team - an elite
strike team of paranormals. Individuals gifted with extraordinary
powers of the mind. They go where our government cannot and will not
venture. Protecting national interests at home and abroad, dealing
with the growing terrorists threats. (paranormal and otherwise). This
a pilot movie/series being shopped around by Mindshadow Entertainment.
* C.I.D.: Network Undecided: Patrick Swayze
has been enticed to turn his acting towards television and a new
series in the vein of J.A.G. for Warner Bro. Swayze will play a member
of the U.S. Armies 'Criminal Investigation Division' and the series
will be much darker than J.A.G. The hour long drama has no network
attached to the project... yet. It is slated for a new 2002
series.
* Colosseum: The Dice Man, Andrew Dice Clay will be joining a new
Time-Travel series titled 'Colosseum'. According to The Hollywood
Reporter, the Pearson Television production has signed Outer Limits
writer-producer Sam Egan to run the show, and Stargate SG-1's Mario
Azzopardi to direct. It was scheduled for exhibition in January 2001 at
the National Association of Television Programming Executives in Las
Vegas. I don't have any status on this or whether or not the series was
promoted or shown at the NATP. Time will tell. This was reported by
sciencefiction.com back in November 2000. Latest word (2/2k1) is
that this series will not happen. It is not listed on the 2001
schedule. Slight chance for 2k2. They were not
able to sell it to enough stations, and financing from telescene fell
through. (2000)
* The Crow: Stairway to Heaven: DEAD:
Series was to be brought back by Pressman, after he obtained the
rights. Mark Ducascos has stated that after all this time he would be
unlikely to return to the role. Series ratings were good when

* Dark Age of Camelot: syn: At one
time titled 'Pendragon': The
legend of Camelot is explored in this potential series, including, of

Hale is on board the project as head writer, with Lawrence Bender and
Kevin Brown producing.

* Devastator:

Bruckheimer Television is developing Jerry Hudnall's (harsh realm
co-creator) Devastator comic into a weekly series. Witchblade pilot

The comic takes place in the near future and tells the story of a man,
John Blake, an ex-cop whose life sucks and is getting worse. He takes
a drug that will give him some temporary relief and make him happy.

who is suppose to take out the major of a major city. Fighting back
the drug Blake sets out to find the people who did this to him.
* Dragon Riders of Pern:
Anne McCaffrey novels was to have come to
life in this new series loosely based on the books. Atlantis Films and
Zyntopo Teo in Ireland have back out before production began. New
financing being sought after. Airing in the fall unlikely now.
Possibly 2k1 if funding is found. ( would be better on the big screen
or as a series of TV Movies ) Still nothing as of JULY on funding for
the new series. (October: Appears dead as of Dec
2000.)
This project was not related to Ron Moore's futile attempt.
* Escape From New York:
Snake Plissken
will return in 2k1 in a new series from the feature films. Hauk will
be the villain in the series. It takes place in the near future. Not
the prison theme used in the movies. Kurt Russell is attached to the
projects but will NOT be in the role of Snake Plissken. Likely to
co-produce the series or something like that. Howard Chaykin (viper)
will be the head writer for the series. Sounds like a Lorenzo Lamas
role. This would be perfect for him. Status Unknown. Likely
dead due to the end of syndicated time slots.
*
Flatland: Unknown Network:
Dennis Hopper is set to headline this new 22 episode TV series,
'Flatland'. A series done in the vein of 'the Matrix' and 'Crouching

Waite, Katherine Kendall, Philip Rhys, Francoise Yip, and Bumper
Robinson. "Flatland" will borrow from the history of Chinese
martial-arts and swordplay films, which have people flying through the
air seemingly effortlessly. The series has yet to find a home in the
United States. Morgan and Ruddy said they are in talks with several
major broadcast and cable networks but declined to give further
details. All 22 episodes are completed. Special effects will account
for "a very healthy portion" of the show's budget of $1.75
million an episode. Production of the series, including
postproduction, will be done entirely in Shanghai, where Hweilai
Studios has secured $300 million in investments so far (HR 6/26). The

Bruce Zabel (dark skies), reported, "Wesley has agreed to guest star not only in the pilot,
but also in three of the first thirteen episodes. He will actually be a major player, not only in an ownership position, but also in helping
make the series as good as it can be." (sfx network) There is no word as
to whether the new series will be syndicated or not. Luckily this one

Majel Roddenberry. She says the series is ready to sell to cable and
has been written in a new form. Not sold yet. Series pilots failed in
1973 and 1974. The 1974 pilot starred John Saxon. No date on this one.
It will likely be done after the animated 'Starship' is up and
running. They have been waiting for Andromeda to settle in before
working on the start of a possible third syndicated series.

series almost ready to be put into production in the next year or so.

2k2 release. No

interest. MGM has picked up the rights to the series, which is
still in development. Last year Pearson bought the rights, but Pearson
got bought by a German firm and does not distribute to North America
(this the cancellation of 'First Wave'.) The new series is currently
seeking writers and showrunners. Spartacus will be filmed in...
'Australia'. The concept seems more serious style Hercules/Xena.
Unlikely to make it as Conan, was unable to. Could be picked up by a
network as well as going syndicated.

films of the same name. Natasha Henstridge has been asked to be part
of the series. This is in early development and has only been
