MAKET & DOWN TOWN

[Sci-fi music avant-garde from Russia]

What are the Russians up to? Capitalism is my guess, for sure, but also into great music--music with a New-Wave style band named "Maket & Down Town." The band was conceived and orchestrated by Maket; a talented musician and graduate of Ukraine's musical college. He was born in Saratov, 1966, on the Volga River and, at the incredible age of five, began playing folk music with "Kolokochik," a local folk band, playing bell harmonics. His father was a military radar instructor, stationed in the Ukraine. In 1991, Maket formed the band "Ivanov-Down." No one played new-wave [he calls it "industrial style"] and he employed a language in his lyrics [he invented] that sounds like sort of klingon-like. It swiftly conquered hearts of public all over Russia. His group even played at most government celebrations in the finest hotels.

So, what's this Russian swinger's music like? That's a tough one, respecting the fact that every human has his/her own tastes; which are as variedly descriptive depending who you ask. It purveys the sense and flavor of space as presented by sci-fi movie masters; the ability to touch our own inner space-our subconscious. His music elicits, molds, and shapes those emotions which lie underscore the reason we techno-minded humanoids thrive on our daily transfusion of musical resonance. It doesn't matter whether your taste is jazz, pop, heavy metal, rock-n-roll, swing, R&B, Country-ad infinitum, this avant-garde Russian new-wave music has both industrial flavor and cosmic mood crossed with scants of other styles you may well find you enjoy. Here are two demos of his "industrial style" with the unique language he invented:

Maket began his career playing festivals in Moscow, Lvov, Charkov, and USSR cities. He also played Poland. Here, he and his band met musical avant-garde elite bands at Warshava and first learned about other bands and styles around the globe. His instant favorites were Psychic TV, Hafler Trio, This Heat, Dome, Residents, Current93, 23, Skidoo, Gary Numan , Klaus Nomie(?), NWW, Daniel Dax, and other, other rare artist-people beginning to branch out in style, disassociating their styles from Russian mainstream. Most Russians had not learned to appreciate different music since perestroyka.

In the early 90s, a number of musicians came to Kiev. There was "Die Haut", Lidya Lunch, Kid Kongo Power (from "Gun Club"), and feminist group "Matador" And in 93, Maket collaborated with the band "VV" and toured France. He got a good look at another free society's music styles and ideas. In La Mance, he teamed with Jeanote Joris, sax player from "Les Pires" and recorded a Christmas album together; Maket on squeeze-keys and synth. Joris on sax. Here's what they came up with: http://www.planetz.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=3681&forum=17&0.

In 94, Ivanov Down, his first band, did some Hungarian circuit of bars for fun and beer. In 95 the Hungarians invited him to perform at Potsdam Abkommen music festival with Die Haut; meeting Alex Hacky's "Einsturzende Neubauten" and "Crime And The City Solution" groups.

What had really constrained Maket and his band was perestroyka. Mikhail Gorbachev to transformed the stagnant, inefficient command economy of the Soviet Union into a decentralized market-oriented economy. It meant capitalism had arrived in Russia. It also meant people had to learn to survive-to work for real being on their own to sink or swim in the new economy. Maket and his group had to get real jobs.

"Rise music" company from Moscow invited Maket to compose music at the new presidential election. He was stuck there for one year, working with musicians and electronic research, and learned the electronic techno-nuances of the music industry. Pop music arrived and Maket returned home, back to capitalistic work in the advertising field at "Bates", "Sache & Sache" agency creating music for product commercials . The smart man he was, it was a sly move to get some of his music aired over TV radio, and other advertising media. In 2001, he was ready. He created his new band, Maket and Down Town, injecting a new breath into "rock" with his new style

"...I wanted new breath into Rock! I want fantastic sounding of this style, I looked for SCI-FI feelings!...and I invited only Girls! Because they are more "Spiritually strong, more sensitive, more interested of this-paradox!"

So, who are these beautiful Russian chicks of Maket and Down Town?

Olya Petruchenya-bass guitar, vocal, Sveta Tabunchik -drums, Lexandra Morozova-keyboards. And Maket is the composer, guitar, and vocal for the group. In putting the group together, Vanya(VAXA)Pogodichev was the tech-spy, computer support ,web-design guru. Olya and Sveta are previous members of rockabilly girls band "Rock Land Ladies". Olya is a graduate of the Musical institute in Kiev [bass]. Sveta is a grad of the musical college as well as being Sasha-student of the Musical conservatory [classical Piano].

The group performed in Moscow in the cold Winter of 2001 for a national brand manufacturer's party, and did a video shoot performing Maket's "Program News."

What are Maket's plans? He wants to write music and scores for the film industry. If anyone in the music and film industry wants a fresh mind and talent, he says he's your man...from Russia with love.
