Set in the fictional city of
Rutherford, Ohio, 3rd Rock from the Sun follows a team of
eccentric aliens cleverly disguised as humans on a quest to learn
about earthlings and their traditions. The award-winning comedy is
from Producers Marcy Carsey and Tom Werner, who shared credits
include: “That ‘70s Show,” “The Cosby Show” and “Roseanne”
and Bonnie and Terry Turner, former “Saturday Night Live”
writers and co-creators of “That ‘70s Show.” The 3rd Rock
from the Sun Season One four disc set is loaded with extras and
it will be available for a suggested retail price of $39.98. The
release is backed by an out-of-this world marketing campaign that
will generate over 130 million consumer impressions and include
national TV, print and online. The pre-order date is June 28.
The high commander of this
team of aliens is Dr. Dick Solomon (Lithgow), who has taken a
position as a professor of physics at the University of Ohio. Dick’s
associate on the mission is a decorated military officer who takes
human form as a sexy female named Sally (Johnston) and his
intelligence specialist is put in the body of Tommy (Gordon-Levitt)
a teenager going through puberty. And since there was an extra seat
on the voyage Harry Solomon joined the mission. Harry is the goofy
oddball who has a telepathic connection with their leader from home,
the Big Giant Head.
Hilarity ensues as the team
adjusts to their new human forms and the earthlings around them.
Dick finds himself sharing a cramped office with Dr. Mary Albright
(Curtin), towards whom he feels a strange attraction. Sally,
meanwhile, becomes obsessed with Officer Don Orville (Knight). Along
the way the team also encounters and studies their eccentric
landlord Ms. Dubcek (Elmarie Wendel, And the Band Played On)
and Dr. Albright’s assistant, Nina Campbell (Simbi Khali, A
Vampire in Brooklyn).
Producers Bonnie and Terry
Turner described the half-hour comedy that dealt with the human
condition as “Caral Sagan meets the Marx Brother.” Terry Turner
explained that the honesty of the show lies in the alien’s
viewpoint, “The ability to walk in and size up a situation with
unclouded judgment is disarming and terrifyingly powerful. There is
nothing more alien than the absolute truth.” The alien team allows
the audience to see human flaws and absurdities through humor and
comedy.
