First off, the biggest
thing missing is the incredible voice of Peter Cullen as Optimus
Prime. Man, that voice is awesome. It's hard to top what the
original series brought to the franchise, but Transformers Armada
was taken in a new direction with animation that would copy crap
like Pokemon. I found the overall package from Rhino more than
acceptable and kids being kids will enjoy just about anything if its
animated.
It's taken Rhino Home
Video over two years to get the second season released and part of
the problem could have been the lite DVD sales of the first boxed
set. The series quality does not match its predecessor in animation
or story quality.
Transformers Armada
only managed one season on the Cartoon Network, but did produce a 52
episode run.
PACKAGING
The part two boxed set looks wonderful
with colorful animation on the cover as well as on each of the fold
out areas behind each disc. The inside flaps have the episode title
and synopsis for each episode.
VIDEO:
The video
looks good but the colors seem washed
out and there are no real blacks to truly bring out the deeper
colors used in the video. The animation lacks detail like a Pokemon
series... The quality of the work just isn't there to make the video
very good regardless of how recent it is.
AUDIO:
The audio transfer is very good. Sound
nice on the surround, but doesn't use the system at all. I really
enjoyed it.
BONUS FEATURES:
Bonus features are for crap
with most animated shows, particularly the older series.
SUMMARY:
It's not the original but it's entertaining and with names like
Optimus Prime, Hot Shot, Megatron, Starscream, or Galvatron how
wrong can you go.
The DVD sales for this
box set will likely be very lite. Purchases will be made by die hard
Transformer fans and parents who purchase both boxed sets for their
children.
It not a bad set. The
stories are weak and the animation plane, but it's more than
watchable.
