Xiaolin Showdown
premiered in November of 2003 as part of the WB on Saturday
mornings. To be perfectly honest it's a series I never watched on
the WB. I am still partial to the likes of the Herculoids and Johnny
Quest.
I was surprised with
the quality of the animation after seeing so much animated poop on
television today. It has to be one of the better transfers of an
animated series. The episodes are self contained and the shows
storylines are simply enough for the young mind to follow. There's
good action and some comedic dialogue that many kids will find
amusing.
The DVD menus are
simple, but look nice and the extra bonus material doesn't exist. A
special features link should never have been put on the disc. How
many children want to see the television trailers for the series?
None I would imagine. I find this type of animated material better
for a young child than watching the sickly Care Bears or an animated
series about some stupid sponge that wears pants. It ain't the Bugs
Bunny/Road Runner show, but it ain't bad either.
PACKAGING
The packaging
looks nice. The shows main characters
appear around the coiled image of the dragon Dojo. The back of the
cover case is basic artwork with a synopsis of the
series.
VIDEO:
The video
looks excellent. The 2003 masters
presented an excellent transfer. The colors look great and there is
no dust, dirt or debris floating around on the transfer.
AUDIO:
The audio transfer is in stereo and
sounds pretty darn good through the system. The voices are
sharp and clear.
BONUS FEATURES:
The only extras with the
first season is series trailers.
SUMMARY:
The price is honorable for a 13 episode half-hour Saturday Morning
series on a two-disc set.
Warner Bros. has done
an excellent job with the auido and video transfer of the shows
first season. The animation style is very good and the overall
storylines are simple and easy for children to follow. A definite
purchase for mom or dad.
