Space Academy premiered on CBS way back in 1977. This was a time of poor special effects and for a Saturday Morning television show. During this time the Logan's Run the series would premiere along with the heavily anticipated series "Battlestar Galactica" in 1978. Space Academy is definitely not "Ark II".

Space Academy would follow the exploits of a Space Academy team based on a roaming space station.

The music, the special effects, storylines and even the acting were the ultimate in cheesy performances. Writers for the show were short on story and unable to truly write decent dialogue. For children the show would be great, but it's difficult for adults to sit through and get any enjoyment out of it.

PACKAGING
The packaging has a nice flair in its design. Space Academy is written in futuristic text with cut out images of the shows characters on the front. The back contains a few images, episode title names and brief description. The thin dual dvd cases contain two discs and 8 episodes. The inserts are contain images sections from the box front. There is also an episode guide insert (something easy to lose) that contains episode synopsis with some show trivia.

VIDEO:
The video's decent for it's old age. The video appears soft and the colors are a bit washed out. Dirt and debris are minimal on the transfer. For tape masters that were 30 years old the digital work done to them is pretty impressive.

AUDIO:
The audio tracks sucks. the voices are crisp and at a higher range have a sort of metallic sound.

BONUS FEATURES:
Minimal... surprised there was anything.

  • Documentary: Back to School with Space Academy

  • Commentary Tracks: Episodes "Phantom Planet" & "Countdown" with cast and crew.

  • Photo and Art Galleries: Promo Photos, Behind the scenes photos, Reunion Photos w/interview clips, and memorabilia photos w/interview clips.

  • Commercial Bumpers

  • Easter Eggs

  • More Trailers from Ink & Paint.

SUMMARY:
BCI will kill the release of this Saturday Morning Show. The price is steep at $30. Beyond nostalgia there's nothing redeemable about Space Academy.  The series isn't that entertaining, there's no kick ass special effects... nothing.

Young boys and girls that enjoy the scifi stuff will find the series entertaining but at $30 for 15 twenty minute episode I doubt the parents will take the risk.

If you have the $30 to spend purchase the complete series of "Ark II".

Space Academy overall Rating:  C-
