STARS:
USA Network, like its
sister station - the Sci-Fi Channel, is on a run with new hit
series. It's nice to see the hit micro-series The 4400 join MONK and
The Dead Zone. What makes the series unique you ask? Why a Star Trek
Alum of course - which include Rene Echevarria, Ira Steven Behr, and
Robert Hewitt-Wolfe (Andromeda). Between these men and Ron Moore (Battlestar
Galactica, Carnivale) that walked away from a franchise ruined by
Rick Berman & Brannon Braga Science Fiction television has
returned.
The 4400 is a unique
format, one taken on by Battlestar Galactica, is creating a dramatic
series based in a science fiction storyline. What a concept right? I
know!
I originally heard
about the series from the shows special effects supervisor Jim Finn
(Adromeda, Crow: Stairway to Heaven, Eck vs Sever, Poltergeist the
Legacy, etc). What many fans do not know is that the filming
schedule set things very tight and the night time scenes were
actually shot during the day.
PACKAGING
The
packaging artwork is more creative
than the region 2 set that was released. The rest of the packaging
is decent.
VIDEO:
The video for The 4400 is outstanding. It was shot entirely on high
definition video and a new technique was used to film the nigh
scenes during the day.
AUDIO:
The
audio
kicks some butt offering fans either
Dolby Digital 5.1 and a surround track. They really rock the front
three speaks but tend to leave the rears as afterthought. Still, it
sounds great for a television series.
BONUS FEATURES:
Wow! A new series that has no extras. Man, talk about a let down for
the fans. Me? Doesn't matter to me at all.
SUMMARY:
The 4400 flourishes under the new drama-style scifi format that is
taking over television. I am amazed the boxed set has no extras, but
fans can rest assured that the second season will likely be swamped
with extras overload. Fans looking to make this series part of their
collection will be happy with the quality they get in this small but
powerful series.
