Voyage to the Bottom
of the Sea was a classic television series. Despite some cheesey
storylines the series was entertaining and fun to watch.
As a child I fell in
love with that yellow flying-sub. I had both models of the seaview
and the flying sub. Even though the series was in black and white
the first season the special effects and the background music kicked
some butt. David Hedison was a great submarine Captain, presented as
the daring hard nosed professional sailor and Richard Basehart as
the scientific mind helping to solve storylines that were a bit out
of this world.
Just having the series
on disc is amazing enough but Universal truly dropped the ball on
this set not including something as basic as friggin' "Autoplay".
It's a standard screw-up happening way to often with much of the
older material heading to dvd.
PACKAGING
The packaging is excellent in a blue overtone. The use of pictures and images
are expressive. Universal did a nice mixing it together. There are
three slim-disc cases contained in the pack - each containing one
double-sided dual-layered disc. The insert covers are the same
images used on storage box.
VIDEO:
The video
looks very good for its age. The black
white images are crisp and sharp. Dirt and debris are minimal as
well. It doesn't work as well on the digital television as it does
on the analog, but from a safe distant it looks ok.
AUDIO:
The audio transfer is in simple mono.
The audio is sharp and the voices are clear. The music does not
suffer from any kind of pinging. There is a lot of hissing in the
background. It's a real pisser that Universal did not make the
simple effort of clearing this up.
BONUS FEATURES:
For the age of the series it's surprising to see any extras and the
home Movie footage from Irwin Allen is priceless.

SUMMARY:
I think it's awesome getting Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea on
disc. The quality of video and sound are decent enough to enjoy this
set for a long time. I would recommend the first season to anyone
and feel fortunate to have a set on my shelf.
