Alf moved into his
prime during the shows second season. The stories were much better,
but still light hearted and geared simply to entertain.
The Melmacian fur ball
continues to irritate the household and play his antics to the
audience. Between the Gilligan's Island episode and David Letterman
season two features the shows best writing and ALF hits his
stride.
I hate not having the
original broadcasts, but I'll take ALF in syndication rather than
not having the furry alien at all. Aslo missing from these sets is
the useful and underrated feature of "AUTOPLAY". It's a
must when watching a series. The feature kind of turns the
show into long feature film.
The series is a fun
500+ minute ride that is enjoyable at least once through the discs
and children will enjoy flamboyant pain the royal ass
character.
PACKAGING
The second season boxed set is as plain as season one. It's just a
plain color background with a photo of ALF and text. They are using
a thick four disc case that uses a two disc sleeve inside. The box
is thick, and would have looked much better with the thin two-disc
cases. There is also a episode insert which lists the episodes on
each disc, but lacks the synopsis for each one.
VIDEO:
The video transfer does look good. It's a bit soft but the episode
colors are accurate without any bleed. I was surprised by the lack
of debris or dirt. It has to be that the master tapes were trashed
and couldn't be redigitized. The laugh track is horrible.
AUDIO:
The audio is in Dobly Digital 2.0 and
sounds OK.
The series is a front speaker
broadcast. Stereo is a waste on the series. It's sounds much better
through the surround than it does on the televisions stereo
speakers.
BONUS FEATURES:
Bonus material is minimal. You would believe there is some extra
footage laying around somewhere with a few interviews of the
cast.
SUMMARY:
Lion's Gate used the syndicated maters for the second season as they
did for the first. The reason is likely that the masters were in
complete ruin. I would rather think that than Lion's Gate taking a
heft shit on the fans. This is becoming a standard issue with many
of the older shows. Stephen J Cannell is the worst with his material
like Hunter and Renegade using syndicated masters over the
original broadcast which is at least five minutes longer per
episode.
If you're a huge Alf
fan you'll purchase the set regardless. If not, it's still a great
purchase, but one I would pass on if there was something else I
wanted.
