The actual fan base for this series was large enough for Fox to do 5 telefilms based on the one season series. Based on the feature film "Alien Nation" which starred James Caan.

Alien Nation was a typical cop drama which threw in a bit of the new alien among us mixing typical storylines with an alien theme. I don't think any of the writing staff went out on the edge to come up with something different or new. But it was a good television series. The actors made it worth tuning in each week and I did just that. I did not miss and episode during the shows original run and I watch the series on the Sci-Fi Channel.

It will never compare to other one season series like "The Flash", "M.A.N.T.I.S.", "Space Above & Beyon" and others. For what it was at the time, the fan base was large. I had thought for sure Fox would return the series for at least one more season but it just didn't happen.

I enjoyed the telefilms much more than most of the series storylines. Hopefully fans will get a boxed set with all five films in it.

PACKAGING:
The outer slip pack uses some nice artwork and coloring to make for a quality look. The boxed set uses the thin dual clear cases. The insert artwork is the same as the cover on the front with two pictures and episode titles and synopsis on the back. The inside of the case uses no images, but has some green smear behind the disc to add some coloring to the insert.  The discs are double sided so there are not images on the discs.  It's a very nice set.

VIDEO:
The digital transfer looks
like VHS Quality at best. On the 32 in television the quality is good. There's quite of a bit of dirt and debris. The transfer was not cleaned up after the masters were used. The colors are good with minimal fade and bleed. The blacks are actually dark and help give the video some quality. On the 32 inch digital the picture is horrible. Before you even get close to the screen you can see pixelation and distortion in the picture. From a distance the video is still is watchable.

AUDIO:
This
audio is Dolby Digital 2.0 and it sounds OK. It doesn't work the system at all but the sound is clear and crisp. It's the best you could hope for with the effort put into the set.

BONUS FEATURES:
Let's just hope you didn't really want or expect any. For me its fine. Just having the series on DVD is a great thing.

  • Episode Commentary by Kenneth Johnson

  • A "Behind the Scenes" Featurette

SUMMARY:
20th Century Fox didn't put much effort into the production of the Boxed Set. At least they released it onto the DVD format for the fans to get their hands on.

If you're a fan of the series you'll purchase it. It's definitely worth having for the Science Fiction Mogul out there. For a new fan it might be a steep purchase and I doubt the boxed set will be a huge seller simply based on the quality and effort put into this product by the studio.

Alien Nation "Complete Series"  Rating:  A
