Season five takes Angel
out with a bang. When the series completed filming season five
it was expected the WB would renew the series for at least one more
season. This final season does bring to fruition some of the stories
they had running.
The funniest episode
of season five is "Hey Kids, It's Smile Time" where Angel is turned into
a puppet. It doesn't get much better than that.
I never cared much for
Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, but enjoyed Angel when the character spun
off on in his own series. While the series struggled in the ratings
on the WB the fans were loyal and each season the series actually
got better. Few series have the ability to adapt, change and improve
with each season. But with Angel, Joss Whedon had found a
comfortable niche for the series without sticking with the same
material all the time.
I found it hard to
believe that the star of a television series would desire the
cancellation of his own show. David Boreanaz stepped forward and was
pretty vocal about his desire to have the show cancelled. The
pressure was to much responsibility for the livelihoods of the
cast and crew. Turned out better to have them out of a job I guess
rather than fighting to keep them employed.
PACKAGING
Angel's season six looks outstanding
using quality images to cover the boxed set. The slip case is made
of a thick cardboard. The fold out contains the six discs with great
images on each side and a city view that covers the area behind the
discs. The set will look great on the shelf.
VIDEO:
The video is outstanding. The series is only a few years old so the
masters still look good. It shows on the digital transfer with
bright colors, dark blacks and few artifacts in the video.
AUDIO:
The audio is an impressive 5.1
transfer
and makes decent use of the
channels

SUMMARY:
Angel's final season runs well.
Likely the best season of the series that loaded with humor, decent
stories and some kick ass action. Mix that up with some nice video
and audio and you've got a ton of fun for hours on end. The Angel
series offers fans some excellent television. If your looking for a
series to take in for the first time this could be the set for you.
All five seasons will be complete and uncut on DVD. It's a great
set.
