STARS:
Shannon Doherty, Holly Marie Combs,
Alyssa Milano, Brian Krause, Ted King, Dorian Gregory, Greg Vaughn
These were the best
seasons of Charmed which had Shannon Doherty on the show. Holly
Marie Combs was up and coming and Milano just had the great tits.
The second season is the shows best season. Fans are familiar with
the characters coming into the season and the writers were
comfortable with what they had to deal with and writing for these
three beautiful women. Their powers were growing and the Halliwell
sister are a bit more comfortable being around each other.
This was a show I
never thought I would like. You could just feel it was to campy to
really work, and each week I found myself tuning in. The opening
music is kick ass, and let's face it, I enjoyed watching these babes
on the small screen. The stories were entertaining and the girls
were getting into their grooves together. It all clicked and worked
for the fans.
I really thought the
dvd boxed set would be much better though. There is a lack of extras
you would expect from a WB series, back when the network was
struggling for an identity. Charmed enters its seventh season and
what likely be its last. That being said the fan base is huge and
just how many series can last seven seasons anymore? You would think
that Warner Brothers would have done a much better job with the
discs. This is just an overall BLAH generic dvd boxed set.
PACKAGING
The packaging
is really drab. Orange with a cast
photo and Charmed printed across the top. It looks a bit better than
I have quickly described but not much. It's a plain Jane cover with
very little effort. The back of the disc has not box set statistics
it's just a paragraph about the series and a few images.
VIDEO:
What the hell was this. I don't think Paramount did any digital
magic with the masters for Charmed. It looks like they just took the
masters and did a direct transfer to dvd. Don't get me wrong the
video looks... fine. The transfer isn't better than Hunter or Miami
Vice from 80's. The colors are good, there's very little wash out or
debris on the transfer, but it doesn't knock your socks off like it
could.
The video lacks the
"ALL PLAY" feature which sucks big time. How the hell do
you do a boxed set and not put that feature in. I wish they has a
selection that would remove the opening and ending credits and just
play the episodes one right after the other like a huge movie.
AUDIO:
Dolby Digital 2.0 is all you get, and for 95% of the television
shows out there it more than enough. The bass is minimal throughout
the soundtrack, the voices are clear and there's no background hiss.
It's average yunno.
BONUS FEATURES:
Can you say NONE? I knew ya
could.
SUMMARY:
There are some who will be glad when season four shows up with Rose
McGowan and Doherty's character dead. It's the opposite for me. I
lost interested when McGowan showed up, she just isn't a good
actor.
Season 2 and 3 are my
favorites for Charmed. The discs are bland but give you the episodes
which is virtually perfrect for me but the cost doesn't show it.
Come on $50? But we are talking about Paramount, who want more for
less.
