I want to say don't
get me started, but ahead. I am or was a huge Star Trek Franchise
fan. As a kid the original series ruled my world. I had all the
models and they were put together to play with. Particularly the kit
which contained the phaser, communicator and tricorder. The sucker
was nearly impossible to find. I must have put the one kit together
fifteen times. We'd play with it, break and fix it up again to play
with some more. On vacation I had my favorite episodes recorded to
cassette tapes. My parents even enjoyed the listening as we traveled
the US from Florida to Las Vegas.
With the Next
Generation taking off, Deepspace Nine coming online and another
series, to be Voyager, in the works the Sci-Fi life was good.
Despite what you read
below I enjoyed the four years of Enterprise. It's gets better with
each season and deserved the continued support of UPN and Paramount.
This is a great DVD boxed set despite the high pricing Paramount
throws onto the Star Trek seasonal boxed sets.
There are a number of
stand-out episodes in the first season. The Andorians would have
been awesome in the other Trek series. Am I right pink skin?
Enterprise would
follow the dismally handled Star Trek Voyager. The new series was
cutting edge with incredible special effects, great cinematography
and a kick ass looking Enterprise. Holy shit, it was all there
right? "Sound of Horn". Wrong answer Buckwheat. Two names
forever associated with the death of the franchise were attached -
Rick Berman and Brannon Braga. The promise of a fresh take on the
series and moving the show back in time to pre-Federation offered
fans great possibilities. Berman promised a dramatic brush that
would reinvent the franchise. It was suppose to be in the dramatic
scope of the new Battlestar Galactica from Star Trek: Deespace Nine
guru Ron Moore. People believed in Berman. Scott Bakula believed as
well signing on as the shows Captain. Unfortunately what we got was
Voyager in a pre-Fed setting. The same cock and bull stories we had
near the end of the Next Generation and all through Voyager. Both
were plagued with time travel and halodeck rehashed stories. The
writing was on the wall when the first episode opens up with what
else but... a time traveler. A sequence that would run through two
seasons.
I don't want you to
think Enterprise is bad, it isn't. The acting is great given what
they had to work with and the other things I mentioned already look
outstanding. You just have to get past the standard Star Trek fare.
Of course there are some good episodes with some nice dialogue, but
it could have been so much better. I see Galactica and I imagine
where Enterprise could be now.
PACKAGING
Enterprise's packaging isn't as cool as it looks. The outer case
that holds the disc is extremely nice, but reading the season number
through the opening on the side sucks. It will be difficult to
figure out which one is where on the shelf. The gray box offers no
color designation or season information on it. There is a clear case
which houses the disc holder and episode booklet. The individual
disc holders are held together with a clear plastic tape which
allows the holders to open like a book. I do like the hard exterior
case for shelf storage and if fans wanted to take the effort a quick
color coating over the four raised corner and black numbers could be
used to specify the seasons. It would look awesome and make the set
unique.
VIDEO:
The
series video is anamorphic widescreen
and it looks awesome. The colors are vibrant and strong. There is a
bit of graininess which doesn't take away from it at all.
AUDIO:
The
5.1 rocks, for a television series.
Dialogue is clear and easy to understand pumping through the front
speaker. The soundtrack does not put the rear speakers through any
hoops - they are barely used at all. But the overall sound of the
video is great.
BONUS FEATURES:
They are minimal and who cares.
Just how much bonus material was created for DVD in 80's? Uh... like
none maybe. You do get a few things and it's enough.

Bow” by Brannon Braga and Ricker Berman

SUMMARY:
It sucks that Enterprise is gone. It's
great that the series came out so quickly to dvd. It sucks that the
price is so high. A price tag of $40 to $50 would have been awesome
and sales could have been three times whatever they end up
with. Enterprise is a quality product hands down. For Trek the
writing isn't great, but compared with other Sci-Fi shows it's
pretty friggin' good.
Enterprise is a great
addition to any collection and I would purchase this set before
wasting a buck on Star Trek Voyager. My say is go for it dude and
dudettes. Star Trek rocks.
