Season 3 was in
trouble before it started. There were rumors about cancellation and
then came word that season 3 would be dropped from 26 to 24
episodes. By the end of the season there was more talk about it
possibly being the last than there was about how great the third
season was. UPN & Paramount made the announcement of doom for
any series - Season 4 would be the shows last. Fans tend to start
looking elsewhere when they know a series is coming to an end. Oh
sure, Paramount blew smoke up anyone's ass that would listen if the
ratings were better than a fifth season could happen. We all knew
how bogus that was.
UPN forced Paramount
to cut the shows budget by 50% per episode. There was no profit
anywhere for anyone except UPN. But Paramount needed the series to
hit the 100 mark to make for a viable syndicated sale if someone was
interested in the series. SPIKE TV already has a contract for the
Star Trek franchise and the 100 episodes was really needed.
Season 3 was a decent
season loaded with the excrement of Brannon and Braga all over it.
Great effects and a cast of quality actors just wasn't going to make
up for subpar writing and storylines. The writing had been on the
wall since season one that Enterprise would not make it seven
seasons as every other series had.
Paramount was so fed
up with the series they didn't even attempt to take the series
syndicated or sell it to another network. For them, it just wasn't
worth it.
I personally, have
enjoyed Enterprise for what it was. The characters, the ship and the
special effects were outstanding, and at times some of the stories
weren't that bad. It was a watchable series - it just wasn't
memorable most weeks. The show failed to push the Star Trek
envelope or create interesting characters that you could care
about.
I am looking forward
to season 4 which would take Enterprise in a new direction with some
fresh writing and very nice story ideas. It was to much, to late.
There was no hope for a reprieve, no chance for one more try. UPN
was done with it, and Paramount just wanted to bring the worn and
torn series into hibernation.
PACKAGING
The packaging is the same as the previous boxed sets. The hard
plastic case with see thru blue book style case.
VIDEO:
The digital video quality is feature quality and looks outstanding.
It never looked so good on my local UPN Channel. No debris, no dirt
and no pixelation - just quality broadcasting at its best.
AUDIO:
The
5.1 rocks, for a television series.
It's not as good as Battlestar Galactica but it kicks all the same.
The rear channels are worked a bit, and that is unusual for a
television series.
BONUS FEATURES:
The bonus materials are
decent.
- The Xindi Saga Begins
- Star Trek: Enterprise Moments:
Season 3
- Star Trek: Enterprise Profile:
Connor Trinnear
- A Day in the Life of a Director:
Roxann Dawson
- Outtakes
- Photo Gallery
SUMMARY:
The third season boxed set is equal to seasons one and two.
Paramount has done a great job with the series despite a
questionable case, it does look neat.
The worst thing about
any Star Trek series is the greed of Paramount. An MSRP of $129.99
is totally and completely outrageous. They are not priced to sell,
and if priced correctly Star Trek would have been the best selling
franchise on the market ever. You can find the sets priced at $90
but that still about $30 more than they should be.
I have been a monster
Trek fan all my life, and Enterprise is the only DVD boxed set for
that franchise on my packed shelf.
