What can ya say. Greatest American Hero was a wonderment in superhero treatment for television in the 80's. The only way it was going to work was as a comedy. The series lasted just three seasons but it left its mark on many. Twenty-four years later the series continues to find new fans.

The opening theme is awesome and jumped to the top spot on the music charts in 1981. The shows storylines were intriguing and the performance of the actors were good. The killer to the show was the horrible 80s special effects and the budget to reuse the same ones more than once.

Season one video has gotten the digital transfer treatment while the audio track has was run through the Dolby units for a sort of Dobly Digitial 5.1. The series looks great!

I was a fan of this series also. It was easy to overlook the cheesey effects for what this series offered in entertainment value. The 80's made for a great decade of television and the series are finally getting the DVD treatment. Fans might be a bit disappointed with the limited amount of extras, but for under $25 for 417 hours of video what the hell do you want. Season 2 will be 22 episodes and maybe a few more extras. You can expect a higher price too.

An interesting note was seeing two actors from the Black Sheep Squadron in the first episode.

PACKAGING
Greatest American Hero gets the new thin DVD cases and digi-pack slip case. The graphics for the boxed set are aweful. The cover image of the actors is from a stock photo once used in an old Starlog magazine. The cover sheets used in the DVD's are black with some old images imprinted on them.

VIDEO:
Another nice job from tape masters at Anchor Bay. The video looks good. The colors are bit washed out, but the images are sharp and detailed. There are areas which have a grainy appearance, but these are minimal.

AUDIO:
The audio is a make believe 5.1 transfer of the original mono soundtrack. Odd that the 1984 series Hunter only got the mono 2.0 treatment while this 1981 series got the full ride.

BONUS FEATURES:
Anchor Bay
hasn't loaded up the season one set with many extra but who needs them really. Fans just want the series as part of their collections.

  • The Unaired Pilot from "The Greatest American Heroine"

SUMMARY:
Anchor Bay's
done a nice job with the first season of Greatest American Hero despite the horrible box art. It's great to see the old series getting released to dvd for the fans. If the prices can stay down sales of these old shows should do well.
