STARS:
Richard Boone, Kam Tong & Lisa Lu
Richard Boone stars as
the legendary Paladin. The western era version of private eye. It is
what shows like Mannix, the Equalizer, Stingray, and others would
become. Being a half-hour western was a unique format.
Paladin was a good guy
dressed in black in a black and white television series. Richard
Boone was excellent in the starring role and the acting was good
from the guest stars.
Have Gun - Will Travel
was even a bit unique during it's run on television. The series was
darker and grittier with an intelligent writing making the series
very good. The show had no set guidelines which it had to follow and
left Paladin with a wide range of opportunities with the stories
told.
PACKAGING
Paramount used the same packaging as on MacGyver. Single layer dvds
in the micro cases. The images on the cases, the same as the outside
box but using different images of Paladin in the left side of the
cover sheets.
VIDEO:
Hopefully no one really expected a huge effort to clean up the
video. I found the video itself more than respectable for the shows
age and you can see the bits of popping debris all over the video.
Paramount should have cleaned up the video and audio. The
blacks were a bit washed out. It was decent. The shows masters were
in a severe need of work which Paramount and CBS DVD were not
willing to do.
The music on the menu
is horrible and annoying. You have to manually select main menu when
the running episode is complete to get back to the episode list, so
you know already there is no autoplay feature.
AUDIO:
What audio? It's serviceable, but not good.
BONUS FEATURES:
Limited... Production Notes, Cast Biographies, Behind the Scenes
Episodic Information.
SUMMARY:
It's old, it's black and white and it a western series. The video
and audio are barely acceptable for dvd and it's freakin' awesome
that Have Gun - Will Travel is on DVD. I say it's "Come and get
it Boys and Girls".
This is a must have
for any dvd mogul or western fan. The writing for the show was
cutting edge for its day and interesting for even today's viewers.
It's just so cool that these old series are available for the
opportunity to created new fans.
