STARS: Adrian
Paul, Jim Byrnes, Peter Wingfield, Elizabeth Gracen,
After six syndicated
seasons Highlander came to a close. The series probably should have
ended at five, but the producers wanted to attempt just one more
season. Most series attempt to go out with a bang ending on a strong
note. Davis and Panzer made the effort but it didn't work out that
way for Highlander. It was just one season to long.
I was a fan of the
first and second film, and enjoyed the series as well. One of my
most enjoyable with about the series was the number of familiar
faces that got their heads lopped off each season. Some of the
immortals to lose their heads were Richard Moll (Night Court), Marc
Singer (Beastmaster, V), Soon-Tek Oh, Joan Jett, Vanity (Action
Jackson), Peter Deluise, Dee Dee Bridgwater, Jason Isaacs (Harry
Potter 2 & 4, Soldier), Nigel Terry, Anthony Head, Geraint Wyn
Davies and many many others.
I thought the series
should have had a two-hour finale to wrap things up at the end of
season five when McCloud accidentally kills his young immortal
friend Richie Ryan.
Adrian Paul was so
disinterested in the series that his lack of effort shows most of
the episode in season 6. The only bright spot was the number of
female immortals running through the series as producers attempted
to find a female they could use for a spin-off series. They were
unable to find anyone better than what they had with Elizabeth
Gracen. She ended up in the spin-off series "Highlander: The
Raven" which lasted just the 22 episode first season.
PACKAGING
Anchor Bay
finished up the series quite nicely.
The four section fold out matches the previous boxed sets.
VIDEO:
The final season video transfer is
very nice being free of scratches and debris. The colors are
consistent against the dark scenes. The imagery appears a bit soft
lacking the clarity of season 5.
AUDIO:
The audio it tits on. It sounds great
in Dolby Digital 5.1. The only drawback with most 5.1 audio is a
weak center channel. The voices are drowned out by the dominating
effects and music through the other speakers. After watching so many
films its something you just get use to.

when they did this boxed set. It's loaded with goodies.

SUMMARY:
The series ended on a sour note for
many fans including myself. If you've gotten the first five boxed
sets for your collection you have to finish the set off with season
six. If you might be interested in this series for the first time do not purchase this
set first. You need to see the series as it was in its prime. The
quality of the audio, video and content is equal to its
predecessors. Season 6 is a nice set. My overall rating for the entire
Boxed DVD series is a definite "A". This is a
wonderful series with a ton of hours worth of material beyond just
the series. "There can be only one". And this might be the
one series for you.
Overall for the Season
6 disc
set I'd have to downgrade this boxed set to a "B". It's got
the great video and audio, with a butt-load of extras. That being
said, the quality of writing and performance just isn't up to
Highlander quality.
