STARS: Fred Dryer, Stephanie Kramer, Garrett Morris, John Amos, James Whitmore Jr.

Guest Stars: Robert Englund (Freddy Kruegger), Jane Russell, John Matuszak and Isaac Hayes.

Cannell and Anchor Bay continue to use a syndicated master rather than the original. Anchor Bay has failed to tell anyone if the originals were destroyed or deteriorated beyond repair.

All I can say is... Hunter Rules! Despite using the syndicated masters it's great having the Hunter on DVD. The master theory is likely for shit, since Cannell is using syndicated masters for his other series.

Season 2 finds Hunter and McCall at their best. The series hits its stride as the actors and characters get use to banging it around on the small screen. Stephanie Kramer and Fred Dryer have a great onscreen chemistry.  That chemistry would help the series run 8 seasons. Fred Dryer would become the televisions version of Clint Eastwood.

During this season Hunter would be the first series to ever deal with Rape, when McCall is raped and left for dead. Hunter will experience the thin line between being a cop and going for Vengeance against the man who nearly killed his partner.

It took years but it finally came out what caused Stephanie Kramer to depart the show at the end of season 6. The producers of the series actually went to Kramer and asked her if they could have her character raped again for a ratings boost. She decided to leave the show before season 7. I had originally thought that a rift had developed between lead characters. That was proven wrong with the duos return in a limited series a year or so ago.

Hunter is a kick ass show with easy stories and some quality acting that will surprise viewers. Even today the show has a monster fan base and having the series on disc is awesome.

PACKAGING
Anchor Bay did an excellent job on packaging. The dual-layered discs are packaged in two-disc thin cases, packed into a digipack box that is colorful.

Each insert is loaded with trivia questions about the show. These insert covers use images of the McCall & Hunter in various poses with a blurred background for an... interesting finish.  Season two continues the quality of the first season and fans will enjoy it.

VIDEO:
I have to continue to say... Wow! I hate that the syndicated masters were used for the DVD boxed set, but the quality of the video is dead on.  The episodes do have a grainy appearance, but the images are sharp and the colors are excellent. I expected the transfers to be loaded with debris and dirt, but Anchor Bay has done a nice job cleaning up the video.

AUDIO:
The audio is remastered to in mono 2.0. The sound is clean, the voices clear. I do detect a bit of twang in the video at a high volume and not enough bass, which a slight adjustment to the surround will fix. The sound is adequate, but could have been much better.

BONUS FEATURES:
There wasn't much available back in 1984 since DVD were even a dream back then. However, there are a few basics to the set. It would have been nice to have some interviews done recently by Dryer and Kramer.

  • Audio Commentaries from Stephen J. Cannell and Mike Post

  • "Six Million Dollar Misunderstanding" script co-written by Frank Lupo.

SUMMARY:
It's a nice job by Anchor Bay. Especially giving fans that little "PLAY ALL" feature which so many sets do not have.

Hunter was a juggernaut for 8 seasons during the high times of Miami Vice. Dryer and McCall were two cops that I tuned in to watch every week. Fans will be pissed about the masters that were used cutting the eps down to about 40 to 41 minutes, but having the sets in such great quality is a rush for me.

Miami Vice's Don Johnson's word was Bubba, and for Hunter is was the kick ass phrase, "Works for me."
