For some reason I wasn't even thinking about this series coming to DVD. There were so many other more deserving series that should have appeared first. SeaQuest was a series that I watched every week. Many of the episodes were well written and the dialogue was pretty good. Even the acting was much better than most television shows of the time.

It's amazing SeaQuest even made it past the pilot episode. It was predictable and weak. Beyond the pilot movie however the series is pretty decent even at its boring points. The changes into the third series were unique and a bold attempt to save the show which wasn't going to happen. In 1995 with the series on its way out J. Michael Straczynski wrote a letter to the executives at Universal with his ideas of how to save the struggling series. Needless to say his advice was not taken and the show plummeted into hiatus heaven.

It wasn't well known but the super intelligent dolphin "Darwin" was actually a puppet - created and maintained by Edge Innovations.

PACKAGING
The packaging is as outstanding. The use of pictures and images is excellent. Universal did a nice mixing it all together. Each disc pack makes use of different characters from the show to create a nice pack that fans will enjoy.

VIDEO:
The video
looks very good. It's only 12 years old and the digital work is very nice. The colors are vibrant, the images sharp and the blacks are dark. The digital effects look good even by today's standards. You can definitely tell they are computer generated and still look good.

AUDIO:
The audio transfer has been dubbed to Dolby Digital 2.1 and it sounds pretty freakin' good through the surround. It ain't gonna work the system but its clear and the soundtrack sharp. It's nice.

BONUS FEATURES:
Other than deleted scenes for select episodes there are no extras for this boxed set and not really needed. Without any bonus material however this set should have had a stripped down price as well - like $34.95 or lower.

SUMMARY:
Like most futuristic television show the main force, whether the UEO or the Federation, is always the do gooders with every other one the evil bastard step child that has to be put down. It would be nice to see one that actually plays dirty too and still be good.

This boxed set is very... nice. If you are a fan of the series you will not be disappointed to have this one. It's a quality product without the special features and bonus material.

If you not a fan, the price might keep you at bay. Given a chance you might find a series to enjoy. There are 2.5 seasons of the series to enjoy.

SeaQuest DSV Season 1 Rating:  "B"
