STARS: Johnny
Whitaker & Scott Kolden
Sid & Marty Krofft
ruled the 70's Saturday mornings like non other. If it involved
costumed morons it was from the duo of Krofft. Their titles included
"HR Pfunstuf", "The Banana Splits Show",
"Land of the Lost" and "Sigmund & the Sea
Monsters".
Sigmund is kicked out
of his undersea family and gets found by two young boys named Scott
and Johnny. Sigmund moves in with the boys living in the beach club
house.
I was a youngster in
the 70's and Side & Marty Krofft rocked my Saturday mornings.
Cold milk, cereal and four hours of cartoons was the way for any kid
to start their weekend.
I was a bit surprised
to see the set hit dvd already, but it's great to have the season
one boxed set in my grubby hands. It's not the best burn I have seen
released, but it's so much better than I expected for material so
old. I think the material from brothers Krofft would be a wonderful
turn on to an children today. The programs are entertaining and
fun.
PACKAGING
The
packaging from Rhino Home Video looks
great. A blue shell with a quality image of Sigmund with the title
across the top. The DVD insert is a fold out cardboard shell holding
the three discs that include the episode titles per disc.
VIDEO:
The video transfer looks darned good. The colors are sharp but have
a bit of a washout appearance throughout the videos. I thought there
would be a lot more debris and pixelation but the master has been
cleaned up quite nicely.
AUDIO:
The
audio is horrible. Sounds like crap coming across the stereo, and
even breaks up when the volume is increase through the television
speakers.
BONUS FEATURES:
Creator Alan Spencer went all out on both season boxed sets and
season two doesn't disappoint. It's loaded...

SUMMARY:
Rhino isn't going to set any sales records with Sigmund and the Sea
Monsters, but it will offer the opportunity to turn some kids today
into the world of Sid & Marty Krofft.
I think it's awesome
to have the set on DVD. Rhino should have released the entire series
in one boxed set.
This is a fun kids
show that enjoyed seeing again. The videophile that picks this set
up could have a good time.
