I was a youngster when
this show premiered on television. I wasn't blown away by any aspect
of the series, but it was really neat having a DC comics character
come to life on TV. Lynda Carter was beautiful, but not the agile
star equipped for playing an action hero.
Wonder Woman is a bit
of the list of anticipated DVD's, but it was pretty "neat"
to see the classic series again uncut. Episodes run about 50
minutes.
In the pilot Queen
Hippolyta is played by Cloris Leachman (Mary Tyler Moore Show). In
the series those duties were handled by Caroline Jones, aka Morticia
Addams.
To watch it now you
can see the steady stream of familiar television actors coming in to
play the shows villains throughout the shows run. Most of the 13
episodes are so much alike they really aren't that memorable. You
can only remember so many times that Steve Trevor attempts to rescue
Wonder Woman only to be captured and rescued by our Red White and
Blue hero.
The set includes the
1975 pilot and the 13 episodes of the first season. It was the only
season aired by ABC. After the shows cancellation CBS was quick to
step in and air Wonder Woman for an additional two seasons. A change
which brought about major adjustments to the series like bringing
Diana and Wonder Woman into present day.
PACKAGING:
Warner Bros created a 70 style
comic book feel to the boxed set with a fold open book that contains
the three DVDs. Imprinted on the pages of the fold out are images of
the shows cast and episode titles with synopsis. The box set looks
very nice.
VIDEO:
I was blown away by the quality of the shows transfer to DVD. The
colors are sharp and the contrast did need to be adjusted. Oh, there
is the expected graininess and a bit of debris here and there. For a
thirty-year old transfer it's outstanding.
AUDIO:
The Dolby Digital 2.0 mono is quite good for the series. It's got a crisp and
clear sound. The opening theme music sounds great. There is a bit of
noise in some areas during the episodes.
BONUS FEATURES:
There is minimal bonus material with the boxed set. There is
commentary from Lynda Carter for the pilot telefilm and a new
documentary titled... "Beauty, Brawn and Bulletproof Bracelets:
A Wonder Woman Retrospective".
SUMMARY:
What can you say? Great packaging and
wonderful thirty-year old transfer of a classic genre television
series. This is a movie moguls must have for their collection. There
are tons of series coming to dvd. Many will have to pick and choose
what they purchase. If you're having a tough time deciding on an old
series to purchase and have $30 bucks to throw at something check
this set out.
