Gotta
rate this an "A" without even having viewed or heard the
DVD boxed set.
STARS: Bruce
Campbell, Julius Carry, Christian Clemenson, John Astin, Billy Drago
Regardless of the
quality, video, audio or content you have to give a series with
Bruce Campbell an "A" overall. The underrated actor can
bring life to any role and it becomes a joy to watch the guy do his
stuff on the screen.
Warner Bros. made the
attempt to return to the days Wild Wild West in a new series adding
some comedy and light-hearted story-lines. Like Hercules, Xena or
Jack of All Trades the series were made great by the quality of the
actors appearing on the shows. It surely wasn't the content of the
writing. Unfortunately like most Bruce Campbell projects the series
flamed out by the end of it's first season.
It's great to see this
series finally make it's way to DVD in a stellar looking boxed set.
The series being just 27 episodes prevents Brisco from getting a
decent repeat purchase from any of the networks and coming to DVD
will allow fans to have it as part of their collection and new fans
to be found.
Unfortunately the
pricing of the complete series is not conducive to purchasing the
boxed set - for newcomers or some fans. $99.98 or even $69.99 say
from Amazon can really crunch the pocket book.
PACKAGING
Warner Bothers did an a nice job with Brisco's box art. It looks
good, it colorful and the spine of the boxed set is a bit eye
catching on the shelf. Each fold out has wonderful images that
are also included in the booklet that is included in the set with
all the titles.
VIDEO:
Wow. The video transfer looks really good from the 1993/1994 video
masters. The debris and dirt are minimal. The colors are solid with
minimal bleed. It's a really decent job from Warner Bros.
AUDIO:
The audio is clear but the music comes across with a metallic
feeling to it. Don't get me wrong, the soundtrack transfer is pretty
darn good for an old television series before dolby digital was
added to television sound.
BONUS FEATURES:
Gidget's a little light on this side of the set. But how much stuff
is going to be around from 1965? Not much other than new interviews
from the stars still living anyways.
- Commentary by Bruce Campbell and
Carlton Cuse on the pilot
- Brisco's Book of Coming Things:
video catalog of the show's signature references to future items
and ideas
- The History of Brisco County:
retrospective documentary
- Tools of the Trade: Brisco lore
featurette gallery
- A Reading from the Book of Bruce
- A Brisco County Writer's Room:
round table with key series creative personnel
- Booklet liner notes by Bruce
Campbell
SUMMARY:
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. is a great series to have on
DVD. Bruce Campbell is excellent in the role as legendary cowboy
Brisco County Jr. Fans will enjoy the change to revisit the
series.
Should you purchase
the boxed set. I'll have to leave that up to your pocket book. Is it
worth having? Sure it is, but not at the expanded price. Check for
you deal at Best Buy, Sam's Club or Costco on July 18th, 2006.
