Tales From the Crypt
has always been a unique horror series beyond coming from a comic
book. The Crypt franchise comes from producers David Giler, Richard
Donner, Joel Silver, Walter Hill and Robert Zemeckis. The producers
brought in top notch directors and the stars of television and
feature films. The writing was top notch and expected when you have
guys like Frank Darabont and Donald Longtooth.
The series is a
television masterpiece done in an hourly format. The only series of
this type that comes close was Stephen Spielberg's "Amazing
Stories" that was done on a higher budget and a much lighter
tone.
The fourth season is
excellent. You will love it. Long Live the Crypt Keeper. Ha!
PACKAGING
The cover artwork looks good. The Crypt Keeper is dressed to impress
with an awesome grey suit. His feet are propped up on the desk and
he's deep in some heady dark arts shit. The inside case have a great
image of the crypt keeper as well. On each side of the case is the descriptions
of the episode synopsis.
VIDEO:
The video transfer is sharp. The
colors are vibrant and there's no bleed. Pixelation is absent with
minimal dirt and debris on the transfer. It looks great.
AUDIO:
The audio is in Dobly Digital 2.0 and
sounds decent. Sure, it's better than season one and two but it
won't rock the audio system in the least but the voices are sharp an
clear with no distortion at the higher volumes. It's acceptable.
Most of the background music is cheese but can really add to some of
the episodes.
BONUS FEATURES:
You basically aren't getting any extras with the boxed set, but with
the quality of the stories, the actors, and directing - who needs
extras.
- Commentary by the Cryptkeeper
(voice by John Kassir), writer Alan Katz, and series chronicler
Digby Diehl on What's Cookin'
- "Stars of Season 4"
montage hosted by the Cryptkeeper
SUMMARY:
These Tales of the Crypt boxed sets are nearly priceless. You seldom
see the stars of television and feature films do these types of
projects anymore. With class of producers, directors and actors you
just can't go wrong. This is a great collection for any video mogul.
