What a surprise when I watched this series on the Sci-Fi Channel after they had originally passed on the series earlier in the year. After success in Canada and overseas the SFC jumped on the bandwagon well aware they couldn't lose out on the series.

I found the new take on Dr. Who most excellent and the acting of David Tennant & Billie Pipper superb. Tennant leaves at the end of the first season and now Billie Piper is killed off in the season 2 finale. It's amazing how many actors today are afraid of type-casting (Christopher Reeves as Superman; William Shatner as James T. Kirk for most of his career.)

During the show first season I really enjoyed the writing on the show as well as the unique special effects. The light-hearted Dr. himself is a royal joy to watch and Ms. Billie Piper is a bombshell worth watching for alone. The English accents (it's a British show) are quaint and enjoyable. The overall product presented to the fans is refreshing.

The quality and sound of the series has to be excellent since the product is less than a year old. Fans should expect the best quality.

The BBC Warner series is a bright flash for television and fans will enjoy it. At $99.99 US sales will be minimal. That's a hefty hit in the wallet for a 13 episode first season of anything and Dr. Who has never been a mainstream character in the US.

PACKAGING
Warner Bothers
put together an excellent image for the boxed set art. It's entertaining and the interior of the packaging is a little weird with the 70's style artwork but it looks very good.

VIDEO:
Well, the video looks as good as expected. The video is clear without debris or dirty. There's no pixelation and the colors are sharp and crisp. This runs through to the entire set of 13 episodes.

AUDIO:
The audio is good, but not to impressive for a modern television series. The voices are clear and the music sounds average through the speaker system. It won't win any awards but it gets the job done.

BONUS FEATURES:
Warner Bros. put together a nice package of extras for the first heavily anticipated series. Dr. Who's first season is loaded.

SUMMARY:
Dr. Who actually kicks some butt. I remember Dr. Who from my days as a child. The effects and acting were so cheesey it was hard for me to watch. I was never a fan, but the effort, writing acting and everything else put into the new series is worth the watch.

The price however puts the new series way outside the purchase envelope. $100 for 13 episodes? Yeah, give me a break. I could never spend that much cash for any series with 13 episodes. Rent it or borrow it from that die hard fan who will fork out the funds to have Dr. Who on their shelf.
