This is another series
fallen by the waste side. The quality of the series rivals
"LOST" or "Battlestar Galactica". Surface
offered an incredible mix of acting and storytelling with some
wonderful special effects for television.
It was incredibly
disappointing to have the series end the season in a partial
cliff-hanger only to have the network cancel the series without
something like a two-hour series finale. A common problem with all
network shows given the heave-ho after the end of a season.
It sucks after sitting
through an entire season to be left out in the cold. At least with
DVD and new shows popping onto the market after their first season
fans will get to see this series again. With only 15 episodes at
hand there is no chance of syndication on any network except the
Sci-Fi Channel.
Universal has priced
the series for failure at a whopping $49.98 for a 15 episode series
that has an ending which leaves viewers hanging in limbo with only
their imaginations to figure out how the show would have
concluded.
PACKAGING
The packaging looks good matching the early advertising for the
show. The fold out contains the four discs in the stupid overlay
format, where you have to pull discs 1 & 3 for access to disc 2
& 4. Pain in the ass with more risks to damage the other
discs. The fold out does look very nice with the episode
titles on the back side.
VIDEO:
The digital transfer is sharp and crisp. The video is dirt
and debris free with the colors sharp. There's no pixilation or
color bleed.
AUDIO:
The sound is excellent for a
television series. The voices work well through the center channel
and there is some decent use of the rear speakers. The 5.1 digital
transfer is pretty good.
BONUS FEATURES:
Universal did a poor job with the bonus features of a new television
series. There should have been lots of material created for a DVD
release in the era of television. The deleted scenes are nothing
amazing that would change the quality of the shows.
- Deleted Scenes
- Sci-Fi Special Effects
- Cast Interviews
SUMMARY:
Surface was a really good television show. Universal could
have done a much better job with the extras as well as the ballooned
pricing for a 15 episode series that will leave fans hanging
forever.
