Dubbing Etiquette

If you desire a great collection on tape, or want to trade with other collectors on the internet then this is the page for you. Over the past years I have learned a lot about dubbing videos, the right way.

The list below will help you get the best product for yourself and other traders.

  • First Record the show in SP with commercials, including the series opening and closing credits.  Most traders today want the original commercials as much as the TV series or telefilm you recorded.

  • Choose the format speed, sp/lp/slp or ep, you are going to archive the video in. Stick with SP or LP and stay away from SLP, even with the so-called fabulous 19u micron heads. The best quality recordings make the best dubs.

  • Removing Commercials in a dub - Pause the player in a black frame just prior to the show beginning. Start the recorder recording and let it record for 30 seconds of black screen before starting the player if it's the first episode of a tape. 5 seconds between episodes. 3 seconds between commercial pauses. Push play or pause again to start the player.

  • Pause the recorder as the episode fades to black for a commercial. Fast forward through the commercials and pause the player on the black frames just prior to returning to the episode. Push pause on recorder to start recording. About three seconds later push pause on player to start player. (You will do this for ever commercial break you wish to remove.)

  • NOTE: Make sure you always record the opening credit theme and the credits. Someone wanting to trade with you will likely want that on each episode.

  • NOTE 2: You can also record the opening credit theme at the beginning of the tape and the credits after the last episode on the tape. This makes the episodes between (2 in SP, 5 in LP, and 8 in SLP) seem like a mini-movie. Kind of neat, but most traders don't like tapes done this way. They want the opening theme and the ending credits. Some, even want the original commercials with the episode as well.

  • Leaving the few seconds between commercials and 5 seconds between each episode gives the recording a professional look and feel.

PLEASE READ THIS!!!: by recording the shows first and editing them  to remove commercials you can ensure you don't mess the first seconds of a show returning from a commercial and you won't catch the beginning or ending of a commercial because your afraid of missing part of the episode. If you mess up this also allows you to go back and fix the screw up. This method will allow you to have a professional edit on your collection. Yes, it means your masters are second generation, but if you watch closely the quality difference are minimal. If you have two quality VCRs. And traders will like this type of edit much better, since they will get everything, without partial commercial bleed over.
