VHS TAPES

  ....INFORMATION

Using good tapes is very important. Maybe the most important decision you will make. You want the videos to last. Well, cheap tapes don't. They degrade quickly.  The tapes break, stretch and get to the point where they strain the VCR to rewind them. This puts un-necessary wear on the VCR.

You don't need to purchase the $9 tapes either. The quality difference from the buck fifty tape is not that drastic from a nine dollar tape. It is a waste of money.  Just buy good tapes.

Good Tapes: T120 & T160

  • Maxell, Sony, TDK are my favorites.
These tapes are durable and out of the 1000 or so tapes of this type I have only had three bad tapes.

Cheap Tapes: T120 & T160

  • Kodak, JVC, Polaroid, MGM, And any other off brand tape out there.

You can purchase these good tapes in bulk at places like Sam's club or Price Costco at about $15 for a ten pack of tapes. Some of my Maxell's are over 12 years old and still work great. Choices are completely yours. But use a brand that others you trade with want their stuff recorded on.

TAPE SOUND:
Sound is the biggest issue with the standard brand VHS tapes. The range is so different from brand to brand. It's an area that gets little discussion but is the largest variance the tapes have from each other.  I haven't seen a published listing in years showing the range. BASF use to the have the best overall range but the company is no longer creating VHS Tapes. To determine if the sound is acceptable for your needs, it may be necessary to by a variety to tapes, record the same video on each one and then run them through the audio system you'll be using. Once you determine a satisfactory sound, you'll know which tapes are for you. Best to choose an audio you like from the preferable tape choice.

NOTE
The T200's are hard to find. But these tapes really do not wear very well. The extra tape means the tape is thin. Especially with the cheap way they are put together today.  Up to you whether or not to use them. But back up what is on there on an extra set of tapes, just to be safe. The most common T200's floating around are the Memorex brand. A so so brand to say the least. Better to use to T120's and t160's rather than a T200.
