STARS: Richard Dean Anderson, Dana Elcar

MacGyver's third season is two episodes short of the normal 22 episode per season run. Mac finally comes into his own as Richard Dean Anderson gets comfortable in the shoes of a character that would coin the phrase "We may have to pull a MacGyver on this one."

Despite being successful on Stargate SG-1 for 8 seasons Richard Anderson will always be known as MacGyver to fans everywhere.  The only problem with the character is that most of friends were either in serious trouble or ended up dead at some point during the show. It was dangerous being a friend of MacGyver.  I also found it amazing that the character MacGyver was a vegetarian, yet often ate meat including roasted lizard, a roasted lamb sandwich and even some beef stew.

One of the most interesting characters in the show is MacGyver's wacked out buddy Jack Dalton. A man who could easily take Mac from the fire to the cooking pot in some wild brain ass scam the goes a foul. The character is played by Bruce McGill who I first saw in the feature "Animal House" and then an episode of Miami Vice. He's a great character actor and brings a unique persona to MacGyver for a fun episode.

There are seven seasons of MacGyver and fans have to be loving the great price to have their series on DVD.  Make sure you pick up your copy.

PACKAGING
Paramount is using the custom box with micro cases using some colorful inserts. T
he third season mixes well with the previous boxed sets. They look great on the shelf.

VIDEO:
The digital transfer is from 1986 tape masters. Surprisingly the effort on the transfer looks great. The colors are vivid and the dirt and debris are minimal.  The blacks are dark and the video suffers no wash out.

AUDIO:
The remastered audio in Dolby Digital 1.0 mono. It's perfect for the show. There was never anything in MacGyver that needed the full surround sound package. The voices are sharp and the soundtrack comes through the speakers clear without in ping or metallic noises.

BONUS FEATURES:
NONE.

SUMMARY:
It's great to have MacGyver on DVD. Now with two seasons worth or 44 episodes fans can stay busy during a boring weekend with nothing but reruns on television. The disc set however was not put together with autoplay and that sucks. It should be part of every TV Series boxed set that gets released, but it's quite common not to have it.  The set does not offer any "Bonus Material" which is fine with me and it also keeps the prices affordable. Imagine getting 7 seasons of MacGyver $30 each for a total of $210 plus tax. With the exception of Star Trek Enterprise the other series ran for seven seasons and will cost fans $700 plus tax. You do the math, but I know which type of series I will purchase and which ones I won't. What about you?
